You should always run a thermostat. People think that not running one is beneficial but it’s not.

Your engine needs to be brought up to proper temperature quickly to get the oil working like it should. Running no thermostat will take longer for the engine to warm up and it can actually run a lot cooler when it’s cold outside, which is not good for proper lubrication. I had a thermostat fail open on an older Mustang. The engine temp was below the normal range. Once I replaced it, all was well again.

In most cases , a healthy engine with no thermostat will never get to operating temp.
Fuel injected engines 200 plus .
Carb 180 or so .
The restriction the thermostat creates allows the coolant to absorb .ore heat .
You had a nasty radiator .
That was a restriction.
Why you had that crap in the radiator is unknown.
If the thermostats was removed , because of an overheating problem, you have problems .

My guess is this what has been done .
Look over that stuff you found in the radiator.
As was mentioned , it may be stop leak of some kind .
I would be suspicious of a coolant leak , ex. Head gasket or worst case , crack in a cooling passage.
.
What ever you do , dont panic .

I bought a 96 mystic years ago before I got my first 03 cobra. Seller didn’t tell me about a blown head gasket. He was putting bars leak or something to stop the leak. I found out because of a code for a bad plug and a puddle of coolant under the driver side head.

This is exactly my suspicion. What is done for a cracked coolant passage?

9/10 on a boosted application like your Cobra its a head gasket.
You probably should consider a local shop into performance to diagnose the correct problem.
At this point, run the new radiator with a 170 stat (Reische sp? Is a good one).
If you do that and it starts to overheat, you probably should take it to a local shop.
Hopefully it was just a radiator issue someone tried to pass off by selling with some Stop Leak and pulled T-stat.
Good luck.

Yea thanks bimini that is all I can do now. I am waiting on radiator and yea I got the Reische 170. I did read that cars car run hotter under load without a thermostat. I was running 215 to 220 with Ac on (new compressor) and about 200 at idle. With gunked radiator amd no thermostat. As soon as I intall everything I will post an update.
