There have been a couple of big flares and CME's (coronal mass ejections; think "huge clouds of electrically charged particles for which we are protected by Earth's magnetic field."). From 05/10/2024 through 05/12/2024, the Northern Lights may be visible as far South as Alabama.

I got a good pic of last year's event in late April. Cloudy and rainy here, won't get to see it. Yeah I'm not happy about that.

(edit: wow this site really killed the quality and file size, original was almost 8MB...)

It's nice and clear here right now so I'm going to try and see them tonight. I've seen them once before a long time ago, but we should get a pretty good show here being way north.

When I lived in Montana, we would see them all the time.
Now I don't stay up late enough. Ha!

I've seen pictures from Livingston, Texas, where they clearly visible! Not going to be able to see them from Houston, though, looks like.

What about SW Florida?

I can’t see shit.

Honestly, unless you are in an area with zero light pollution, you can't see it with your naked eye. The picture I posted above is how the camera saw it. All I could see was a very tiny dim glow almost barely noticeable, similar to what a Walmart parking lot would look like from far away. I couldn't see any colors or anything at all really.

You need to use this website to time it just right because 30 minutes after I took that picture there was nothing being captured by the camera. My area was in the "green" on their scale of intensity, which barely makes the Northern Lights visible. I would love to be in the red zone one time.

The Northern Lights seem to come and go randomly it's not like it's on all night in a predictable way. I use this website to time it within 30 minutes of when it would be at its peak to go outside. Looks like you won't see anything anytime soon. You gotta move back up North, and ditch paradise, if you want to see them!

I checked a few times last night to see if it was going to be intense and clearly visible here and I couldn't see anything. Too much light pollution and I didn't have a clear enough sight of the northern sky, but north of me is city lights as far as the eye can see so I'd have to get way out of the area to see it.

That’s a shame. Haven’t talked to my brother but I’m guessing he wouldn’t see them either.

The only time I've seen them was probably in 2000 or so when I was down in Redondo on the waterfront and we randomly noticed waves of a faint white light moving through the sky. That must have been a really intense storm because the amount of light pollution there is very high from Seattle, Tacoma, and everything in between that saturates the sky yet we were till be able to see them clearly.

We've had nothing but clouds and rain during the evenings even though I'm likely too far south to see it... that said, still didn't see it.

A local guy showed me Saturday morning what he took with his iPhone camera (time lapse photos). I was amazed. He told me his naked eye really couldn't see anything. He only saw the lights through his camera lens.

Saw an article that showed photos from Houston I think it was. Houston or San Antonio, one of the big Texas cities.

These are some my sister took out in the Black Forrest, north of COS, Colorado (The ones with conifer trees)

The last 2 that were taken by her friend just west of Wichita outside Goddard. (They don't have as many trees) and you can see aircraft in them.
I couldn't see them from my property thanks to trees and light pollution, unless I tried to catch it using my drone. But I decided against it as a long exposure would look terrible with the drone fighting the Kansas wind, not to mention I'm close to ICT and I'm within a block of an altitude restriction.
