and the starting salary for an NYPD officer is like $20k a year,

I'm not defending the perps, but all this REALLY started when people started getting tired of the blue line, and the police not getting rid of the obvious bad apples. Nobody is going to respect any organization that is supposed to uphold the law, but doesn't look in the mirror first.

Of course, disrespectful rhetoric from the politicians that are supposed to support them doesn't help. But they'd get a lot more sympathy if they'd make sure their own houses are clean.

Show me this overwhelming evidence of “bad apples” in law enforcement. I know there are a few bad ones here and there, but to suggest it’s to such a scale that it feeds the beast of anti-police culture is ridiculous.

I didn't say there's an overwhelming number. I said the police don't take out their own trash, and they don't. The number doesn't matter. All it takes is one, and people will fixate on the hypocrisy to justify their behavior.

Umm, $20k?? Let's be realistic... Below is from NYPD:

Starting salary: $42,500
Salary after 5 ½ years: $85,292.
Including holiday pay, longevity pay, uniform allowance, night differential and overtime, police officers may potentially earn over $100,000 per year.

Additional Benefits
  • 27 Paid vacation days after 5 years of service
  • Unlimited sick leave with full pay
  • Selection of medical benefit packages
  • Prescription, dental, and vision coverage
  • Annuity fund
  • Deferred Compensation Plan, 401K and I.R.A.
  • Optional retirement at one half salary after 22 years of service
  • Annual $12,000 Variable Supplement Fund (upon retirement)
  • Excellent promotional opportunities

Out here where i live it’s a waste of time to be a cop.

Start Mid 20s an hour. They rarely if ever get overtime. No details. Swap from days to nights every 3 months.

They’ve had to bring in the sheriffs office here to help because nobody wants to be a cop

Harlem would become an autonomous city of mob rule. Only the strong would survive, and the weak would be left to the wolves.

Where does one draw the line to allow the wolves take over? How do you abandon the sheep that cannot escape, despite the desire?

That is a tough call to make. One would have to ignore the children, elderly, and the poor that are truly trapped.

When you let the wolves take over, its easier for the sheepdogs to take em out.

This could be stopped in days. One super hero has the power.............

Rudy Giuliani

The end!

A task force needs to go into that neighborhood and run a zero tolerance campaign. A message has to be sent.

are you guys serious? what could be done that wouldn't cause outrage????? mother****ers openly resist arrest, point weapons at police and they expect no repercussions, imagine if they let this incident make they crack down........

Very serious! This is nothing NY city hasn't been through before. The support system for the PD has collapsed from what it was under Rudy. I'm old enough to remember.

I am absolutely serious. Send a task force in there and hammer those people for a week or two. Anything against the law is an immediate arrest.

So basically, liberals hate authority but want Socialism.
Lol
Liberalism,.............it's a mental disorder.

I can't believe the disrespect the police officers get today. It's out of control. I'm glad that our great POTUS is praising police and law enforcement. Granted, there are some that are bad apples, but for the most part, they are great everyday American people.
Someone should of told Obunghole while he was occupying the white mosque that we are a Nation of laws. This isn't the ****ing Congo. I think A LOT of this garbage started with that piece of trash.

I have to disagree with you. The problem is when the bad cop shows his true colors, the damage is already done.

Yup that’s what is happening here.

I will tell you after what happened here, the cops aren’t protecting their own. Which is good...

The two cops in Brooklyn who got soaked are newer cops and maybe were timid to approach that situation in the proper manner. As for the cops in Harlem they grabbed a known perp with a warrant and while cuffing him these other clowns threw water and hit the one cop with a bucket. I can tell you once your putting cuffs on someone they are your responsibility so I can see why that officer didn’t react. Regardless it’s complete BS and I would not tolerate that in my sector.

This is what happens when you have unions. They protect the trash.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're right.

If that's the case, then:
1) Why don't they spread that message as far and as wide as possible? Give people as much information as possible to show them that it couldn't have been prevented earlier.
2) Why do they give them paid leave, or something similar? We all know John Q. Public would be walked out the door at his job under similar circumstances. Why should it be any different for the people upholding the law?

In short, why do they handle it in such a fashion that the optics are so appalling? They have to know how it's perceived by the public in this day and age. I can't imagine they would allow that perception to go unchecked if they had a choice.

That message is pounded into your head in the academy. As far as passing the message to the public, the public will mostly dismiss it and simply want to hold officials culpable and accountable. And if they did try and explain nothing could be done, the media types and community activists will kick into high gear.

2) Why do they give them paid leave, or something similar? We all know John Q. Public would be walked out the door at his job under similar circumstances. Why should it be any different for the people upholding the law?
Officers get paid leave because they are protected federal employees. Federal and local laws and procedures are such that you cannot simply fire someone. I have many first hand accounts of this fact that will make your head explode. And the ones who do get fired typically get their job back after civil service hearings and appeals. I agree if an officer does something agregious, then he should be placed on unpaid leave pending the outcome of the investigation and/or court ruling.

In short, why do they handle it in such a fashion that the optics are so appalling? They have to know how it's perceived by the public in this day and age. I can't imagine they would allow that perception to go unchecked if they had a choice.
I don’t know about where you are, but down here there have been several recent incidents where legit criminals are “handled” by police after resisting. The public support for the criminal and condemnation of the peace keepers is strong. The media will word stories in such a fashion that it appears there was wrongdoing by an officer, when in fact it was quite the opposite. Again, several first hand accounts of this. Basically the perception of police is guided by the culture it exists in, and no matter how many grandmothers I help cross the street, none of my actions can erase the few and limited number of bad cops who tarnished their badges, and quite frankly me.
