Oil quantity at change

So....changing the oil in my stock '95 R for the second time. I don't remember this problem from the first time. Drained fully, hot overnight and drained the cooler also. Thinking capacity 6.8 qt, I put in 6 qts and started the engine. Oil cooler doesn't seem to be thermostatically controlled and so I thought I was safe with 6. But I'm WAY overfull. Draining but not keeping track but the oil level just doesn't seem to be moving from over 1" over the full mark. So long question short: how much oil should I have put in before starting it,checking it, and topping?

Forget it! That's so embarrassing. I forgot about the rear drain plug. All ok now.

Glad you got it worked out. Don't feel bad, I've made similar or greater mistakes in my many years. LOL.

Unless you disconnected one of the cooler hoses, you didn't drain it.

That is true, but I have found changing the oil regularly (both plugs and the filter) is good to go.
