Most unfortunate outcome in that crash.

I have seen quite a few very high speed crashes both at Bonneville and at the California Dry Lake El Mirage.

In only one other case was there a fatality. The general outcome is a long slide on either the dirt or the salt. Maybe a broken bone and burns due to surface friction during the slide to stop. He must have been unlucky and was thrown high into the air and the pounding on hitting the ground did a lot of internal damage. Most fatalities on the street come from running into something after leaving the motorcycle.
Some racers at Bonneville are experimenting with wearing fast deploying parachutes to keep the from tumbling and flipping.
