StoryEL PASO, Tx. - An investigation is underway after a man is shot dead by an El Paso police officer in the parking lot of a popular restaurant Thursday night.
Police tell ABC-7 the shooting happened around 7:45 at the Golden Corral on Transmountain and US Highway-54 in Northeast El Paso.
According to police and witnesses, a 35-year-old Hispanic man was assaulting a woman in the parking lot. As police arrived at the scene, the suspect quickly approached the patrol car at which point Officer Roberto Mendoza gives orders to the suspect. As Officer Mendoza escorts the suspect to the hood of the car, the man removed a handgun.
The officer reached to grab the gun, and that's when they started to struggle, the two falling to the ground. Officials say the suspect managed to wrest the gun from the officer and a shot was fired, grazing the officer's shoulder.
The struggle continued and the gun was fired twice more, fatally wounding the suspect. The whole attack against the officer took less than twenty seconds. The woman initially assaulted by the suspect was not seriously hurt and did not require medical attention.
A witness told ABC-7, "The guy came up to the cop and he tried to take his gun...then they both fell on the floor, and then the cop just got the gun and he shot him."
EPPD officials on the scene told ABC-7, "The initial indication is that clearly justified, the officer even use his own weapon, he was fighting for his life as the person was attempting to kill the officer."
Emergency crews tell ABC-7 that the officer is fine and his injury is not life threatening. EPPD officials say their investigation is underway.
