My dad was involved in a car accident november 19th (17 days ago), he was at a stop light waiting to turn left when an 18 wheeler hit him and two others. My dads truck (Nissan Frontier), a late '00s GMC Denali, and a Dodge Caliber were totaled in the wreck.
Every passenger and driver went to the hospital with the exception of the 18 wheeler driver. My dad was the one with the least amount of injuries, the other people were in BAD shape especially the guys in the dodge caliber.
I made the claim for him Monday 21st and got a call from the agent that was going to be handling the claim that same afternoon. She told me they just needed to get all the statements from everyone in the wreck and they would be out to inspect the vehicles, etc, etc. I was told to expect a call the next day (tuesday).
Wednesday comes around and no call so I decide to call to her to get an update on when they were coming out to look at the truck. She tells me they are doing an investigation as to whether there is going to be enough coverage to pay for all the damages and hospital bills for everyone. Thanksgiving rolls around and I wait for a call to be made by tuesday/wednesday. I call the claims agent back on wednesday and get her voicemail. I call the 1-800 number to try to get some info as to what is taking so long.
I get a call today from the new agent that has been assigned to the case. She tells me that they are still doing an investigation as to what they are going to cover if they even cover anything. Supposedly the trucking company canceled their policy the day before the wreck so there might not be any coverage at all. She told me to file a claim with my dads insurance company which I already did. He didn't have full coverage on his truck, just his other vehicles so the only thing my dad's insurance will cover are his hospital bills.
Now my question is, what possibly could be taking them so long to investigate that 17 days later they can't give us a definite answer as to if they're going to cover this wreck or not. Should my dad just go ahead and get a lawyer to go ahead and handle this case, or should he wait to hear what the trucking company's insurance is going to do?
Sorry for the long post guys
