Rebuild or Replace???

I have an 03 Cobra with a blown engine. While overseas my car was sitting for approximately 7 months twice during 2 deployments. I was told that I should have replaced all of the fluids and got it checked out before putting it back on the road. Needless to say that didn't happen. After breaking down I was told that I blew a head gasket, lost compression and most likely damaged the heads. It was recommended that I replace the engine instead of rebuilding it because the cost of rebuilding could exceed the cost of replacing it. Just wanted to know your thoughts on which would be better. Also considering potential resale value and keeping matching numbers.

Thanks

If all you did was blow a head gasket, then you shouldn't need to rebuild. Did it overheat bad? Is there oil in the coolant? What exactly happened when you broke down?
