help me understand this..

A tuner who does not fequent this board told me they wont tune E85

1. E85 degrades quickly in the tank
2. Can drop to 87 octane level in 3 weeks
3. OEM's dont add timing due to this
4. Supply is inconsistent wrt quality.

Help me understand.. i didn't see this mentioned in the sticky's and when i searched this forum for "degrades" i got no hits.

I know ppl who have had there car with a full tank of e85 in there garage for over a year. Started it up and drove it with the full tank just fine.

For start, E85 will not degrade or loose its octane within short time storage and has been tested and proven over and over through various forum's testing. More timing is added and needed for it to burn properly, so not sure why he assumes that. Supply from station to station isn't exact, but close enough that most stations will always have a blend of atleast E70 even during winter, which actually has tested E80 on a regular basis. The octane rating of E85 will hold down to i believe E50-60, but have to double check. There's a lot of guys that aren't good at tuning it, not only for power, but also driveability and startup, so they dont recommend it.

Why not just have a shop do the heads and cams and then have it tuned remotely.

Degrades to what? I've had about 20 gallons sitting in my garage for at least 6 months. It still tests as 87% and the car still cranks up & idles like I would expect.

Still a lot of nay-sayers out there. Just go to a tuner who appreciates your business. Many don't. It's sad.

Just for reference, I filled up 35 gallon drums and kept them in my garage. I had nearly 200 gallons on hand at a time. I used about 10 a week. Guess what, my 12.5-1 compression motor still ran great with no pinging or detonation even in the middle of summer. I raced it like this for a year and never had an issue.

I added about 6 degrees of timing from 93 octane.

While the quality can vary between 70 and 85 percent ethanol, you can buy a tester for dirt cheap. Test first and worse case have two tunes for each level of ethanol. I think your tuner just doesn't want to mess with it.

It degrades to Corn meal after 2 months...True Story...

Bob Kurgan tuned my car and did a super badass job!!! I highly recommend him. He does travel if you can not make it down to the greatish state of GA.
