I agree with above posters who say it depends...barrel length, layout, distance, vision..I have always used #4 Buck 2 & 3/4 as I can handle the load and Mossy would allow one more in chamber. It was the issued round during my police days. Alternating 6 shot with #4 is a good option for home use only. As for the number 4 buck, I was present when two armed robbers were taken out with one shot...the shot hit both of them mid-upper thigh...at ~ 35 ft
