Not going to be getting one. It's just another possible tattle tail. I want to built in command yo never record searches or anything else I don't want anyone to be able to recover.
Could just be really perverted porn.
But it might be plans for global domination involving genetically coded binary nerve gas that only effects Democrats. You know. Stuff that you wouldn't want your GRANDMA TO FIND.
Plus. I have had other devices like this and none of them decoded speech very accurately.
Half the time they would be trying to follow a command hire a dog walker. When it damn well knows that I only have a couple of cats.

Ya have to be careful what you say. I use to get sales calls to buy a gross of diamond saw blades and other garbage. I would say thinks like "not interested but if you have a tactical nuke or a gross of hand grenades, I am in the market". At one point I am pretty sure my house was enter by the Feds.

We have a full size Echo that was given to us as a gift. It only gets used to play music in the kitchen. We also got an Ecobee thermostat a while back, I love being able to turn on the heat or AC from the couch or in bed in the middle of the night if it gets hot/cold. The remote sensor has really leveled out the temperature difference between upstairs and downstairs too, it was worth every penny just for that.

+1 for the Ecobee. I installed one in our last house and it saved us $100/mo on average over the generic Honeywell. The original builder of the house had one heat pump servicing two separate floors, so it was insanely difficult to control.

I haven't got around to installing one in our current house, but I will eventually

I'm just starting out with this. I did not like the Smart Things, Vera or similar controllers that store everything in the cloud and must always connected to your network for things to work. There was also the reported delay caused by the round trip to and from the cloud. I wanted local control, no WAN or LAN connection required and a secure control protocol. I went with the Z-Wave+ protocol, purchased HS3 control software from HomeSeer and loaded it on an Intel NUC. My Z Wave + radio interface is connected to the NUC via USB. No connection to the outside world and Z-Wave+ is encrypted. My first task was to control the temperature and humidity in a closed area where I store things that care about that kind of thing. I purchased a Z-Wave+ temperature and humidity sensor (same senor also detects movement, light, UV and vibration) and Z-Wave+ smart switch to control the humidifier. I calibrated the sensor and humidity is maintained to the accuracy that I want. Next will be various lighting schemes. The HS3 software has much more capability than I'm using. It is capable of being networked so it will interface to your Google Home or Amazon Alexa for voice control or control via your smart phone (too vulnerable for me, but its available). All your device control events are stored on the local controller and not in the cloud. Response is immediate which I like.

I just haven't seen any benefits that would make my life better enough to spend the money and time setting this stuff up. Plus I'm not sure how I feel about all kinds of shit in my house being connected

I have the Samsung Smart things. I love it. I have the Camelot front and back door locks, lights, light switches, thermostats, motion sensors and the garage doors all controlled through smart things. Have had zero issues. The smart apps are amazing. You can set up different settings on switchs and lights to turn on and off. I love the front door lock, I can set up different access codes so incase my roomates girlfriend becomes a physco I can just delete here code on the phone and she can't go in . It also let's you know who's coming and going.

I've been thinking about getting a simple automated light system for the house.

I was curious as to who is using their phone for some of this automation of their homes.

I was thinking about something like a cheap tracphone or similiar, using an app to tell Alexa to turn on lights as we pull into the driveway etc.

Question. Is there ANY possible way that an outsider could hack into a Smart Home? Every time I hear about, or see, a front door smart lock, my first thought is "is it possible for someone to hack into the system, unlock my front door, and walk right in"? Or is it not possible for this to happen?

Not sure I wouldn't get those locks, I just have bulbs/smart outlets. The locks may be too much for me.

I use Samsung Smart Things / Philips Hue / Apple TV / Homekit.

The Samsung Smart Things provides the security. The Hue provides great light control.

Home Depot has the Hue White bulbs on sale for ~$10.

For those that have setup these smart devices, do you still have manual control over everything?
The reason I ask, is with everything being hosted on the cloud, are you dead in the water if the cloud goes off-line?

Amazon Web Services had a recent outage, and I heard people couldn't even turn lights on or off in their own homes, and things like garage door openers and deadbolts were not working.
