If you were starting over...would you choose a Mustang again?

I changed nothing in my driving, switched from a well-built 99 Cobra to a stock C5Z06 and immediately dropped 5-8 seconds at every track I visited... on the same tires.

-Kevin

That's what I always wanted to know..!!

Damn, 8 seconds? I'd break the record of ST at summit point lol . I always knew that I'd be faster in a C6 Z06, but never expected THAT much faster! :)

Just curious, what exactly is "a well-built" 99 cobra?

Oh, I remember now your ad in CC ! :)

Actually, it was a nice car to track! Probably not too heavy either. I always wanted to play with my friends with Z06's but all of them wear R-comps... hard to compare in that way .

I am seriously thinking about picking up a used 2011 V6 6 speed manual Mustang.

After reading about the Car and Driver Lightning Lap 2011 at VIR results, my brain has been spinning.

FIFTEEN FREAKING SECONDS PER LAP UP ON THE FREAKING SPEED LIMITER?!?!?!!! and it still turns a 3:12.5!!!!:uh oh:

And shame on you Ford for not moving the speed limiter up to the PP tires capability before releasing the car!:nonono:
I have been waiting for a test similar to this ever since these two engines came out in the new Mustangs! The V6 immediately became viable in my mind when that 3.7 got plugged in.

Do you realize how fast that car could be with some very conservative low cost mods? Fast in this case being low lap times.
"Yea but any car can be faster with mods":bash:
No kidding but not all cars would provide such an incredible track experience for so little total money invested!
Not all cars have the aftermarket support and go fast parts availability that Mustangs do.
Not all cars could be that fast with that little spent and then get close to 30 MPG on the way home and be such a great daily driver!!!
Nearly every go fast part that is available for GTs, GT500s, and now BOSS 302s (that is not engine specific) will bolt right on to a 2011 V6 Mustang.
This includes take offs as guys go aftermarket on those heavy cars trying to go all out.

A deranged gear head syndrome devious plan begins to emerge ...

Buy a 2011 V6 Mustang.(possibly even used plain jane V6 6 speed !)

Add 3.73 gears and Detroit True Trac diff.(sell take off 8.8 traction lock diff and gears)
Add 18x9.5 FRPP GT500 wheels($137.50 each) or an aftermarket light weight Enkei Performance Imola Bright Silver Paint
Add (4)255/35R18 R compound tires.(for on track use)(still thinking about tire sizing)
Add 14" Brembo GT500 brake kit(used take offs are now available) and ducts.
Add SCT flash tune with speed limiter removed or moved up.
Add 4 point roll bar and 6 point belts.
Add (1) light weight supportive racing seat.(for street use just put the oem pass seat back in)
Add 2010 GT500 hood vents.(probably the only cooling mod needed)
Remove spare, jack, both OE front seats and do rear seat delete and ditch rear speakers and amp if there is one.
Add (1) can of fix a flat.

Embarrass much more expensive cars on track with your "Secretary Special"(SS), smile and be nice to them after each session and comfort them by telling them how great their car looks and sounds.:-D

Later on...
Add centrifugal supercharger and supporting mods.(when it becomes available)
Be even more humble after sessions and try to contain the perpetual smile.

I am so wanting to do this!:dancenana:
I am afraid that the humble and comforting part is going to be a real challenge.:-D

I can't wait to see where the 2011 V6 base-classes in NASA TT.
Right now it's TTF (Mustang V6 ('99-'08) TTF**)
A stock one could be a killa'!

I agree. I think this car is going to be a game changer as far as Mustangs go, and even in the tracking community in general.

There is a whole lot of win going on right there and a whole lot LESS WEIGHT!

Though once someone hangs a Vortech or Procharger on, the tire usage is going to increase quite a bit. Hopefully they will have already done the 14" brakes.

The 2011 V6 is 34xx lbs.

I've driven a stock automatic 2011 v6 at Willow Springs and was extremely impressed... I am even more impressed after yesterday.

I had a 2010 Camaro SS at Willow Springs yesterday and the lap times between it and the V6 Mustang were nearly identical. The Camaro had 220 treadwear tires, Brembo brakes and over 100 more HP. The v6 Mustang we had much narrower 400 treadwear tires, smaller brakes that we could get to fade, crappy suspension, and the 2.73 rear end!! We were hitting the speed limiter for about 5-6 seconds a lap.

hey Jimmy, Do you have any real info about the difference in weight? I've trying to find the real difference in weight and i can't find it...

I have to admit 3400 and change is by no stretch light.
But after seeing the weight of my car and the the new street BOSS, and 2011 GT, that 3400 and change looks pretty good.

I think with a nice set of semi-sticky 18s, 14" brakes, flash tune and conservative weight reduction, they are going to be more than respectable.

Yet still be a killer daily driver.
OK and we have not even really talked about ProChargers much yet.

They may be stock BOSS beaters after that mod!... maybe:-D

wait.... you know the weight of the BOSS? dammit, how did i miss that? Could you please post the weight?

I agree with you with the wheels, brakes and maybe seats for weight reduction, but coming from someone who owns a car that has 10% of Ford left... I would stay away from major mods to stay reliable :)

Are there any reliable dyno plots out there on the V6? All I could find with a quick search was this, but I'm not sure if these numbers seem low.

Never mind... Found this one..

[nomedia="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n161v2w_esw&NR=1"]YouTube - mustang v6 3.7 dyno 260whp on MD stock #2[/nomedia]

260hp on 3400 pounds... For the money...it could be a nice choice all around. It fits the axiom of a proper track car... Cheaper to buy..Lower insurance rates, DD capable, not a collectible so there less concern about resale or bent sheet metal.. Not sure of the burn rate on the consumables, but you have to figure it has to be at least a little less than a indentically equipped GT.

It could be because of what I have been driving these last couple of seasons, but these cars, the camaro etc.... are as big as houses..

Troy,

I couldn't agree with you more. Being close to 2 tons, is a lot of mass to move and more importantly, STOP! I will stick with my 2300 lb E30:-D

I look at the Camaro, the charger/challanger/300m, and to a lesser extent the latest Mustang, and all I see now is the 2000SUX from Robocop. :)

Lots of take off OE quality V8 suspension parts are going to be available at a fraction of buying new. Including people upgrading GT500 brakes to 6 pistons selling their take offs.

Regular street BOSS = 3,631
"Oddly, the Boss is 26 pounds heavier than a standard GT, according to Ford's stated 3,631-pound curb weight."
Those must be some heavy ass stripes!
2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 First Look

Boss302 S = 3,100 lb (estimated)

2011 Mustang Base GT = Curb weight: 3580 lb
2011 Ford Mustang GT 5.0 - Short Take Road Test - Auto Reviews - Car and Driver

2011 Mustang 2dr base Coupe
2-Door Rear Wheel Drive Car, 305 bhp, 280 lb-ft, 6-sp Manual, 19/29 mpg
4 passengers, 3450 lb, 3.7-liter, V-6 engine, 11.3 lb/bhp

Prepping the V6: Ditching the 17" wheels and adding 18s and 14" brakes is going to add some rotational weight, careful selection of light/cheap aftermarket wheels will be an important decision.

Looks like a tire inflater is already there so no minus for spare removal.:nonono:

The beater BMW's that some people are recomending here are not exactly the most service friendly cars out on the the road. In fact, I would say that BMW's are terrible to work on.

The mustang on the other hand is a million times better to work on than a BMW and it has the biggest aftermarket support of any car on the road.

There are plenty of used race or heavilly modded mustangs cars to choose from as well for a good price.

I think the mustang will go down in history as one of the best open track cars of all time.
