Honestly...no. I have well over $20k in my car with the purchase price of $11.5k six years ago. I am now looking at 02-04 Z06's.

To answer the question at hand.. No I would not go with a 04 Cobra again but I'm not against another Mustang.

I'm currently putting a built LS1 and T56 into this. Should be about 26XX lbs and 400+ RWHP. It should be about done by the end of Feb.

Although I'm still small cheese compared ot others, I would. I'm not the brightest crayon in the box, but I'm brand loyal. I finally bit the bullet and bought a Mustang (albeit one missing 4 cylinders) because I got tired of putting $$$ in platforms that still couldn't match the Mustang (Gen 1 & 2 SHO, Contour SVT). I couldn't bring myself to buy a 'Vette, so I'm stuck in Mustang world. There is no other feeling than riding someone's ass in a 4 cylinder Mustang!

LOL, yes there is. Do it in a 4cyl Escort station wagon. When you see this in your mirror, just give me the point! And the answer is no, I didn't lift.

The beater BMW's that some people are recomending here are not exactly the most service friendly cars out on the the road. In fact, I would say that BMW's are terrible to work on.

The mustang on the other hand is a million times better to work on than a BMW and it has the biggest aftermarket support of any car on the road.

There are plenty of used race or heavilly modded mustangs cars to choose from as well for a good price.

I think the mustang will go down in history as one of the best open track cars of all time.

Are you serious?

Wow... what kind of weather is it this time of year in fantasy land?

Mustangs may not be the best car............ but they are good cars. They also have good aftermarket support and parts are affordable (unlike BMW's) and available at every automotive parts store.

They may not be the easiest car to drive but if somebody 'cut their teeth' on the track driving a Mustang fast, I can guarantee you he's a hell of a lot faster than a guy that cut his teeth driving a Corvette! ;-):poke:

Bruce - the model in question is the E30, not something like the E90. While I will agree with you, that most newer BMW parts are more expensive, the E30's are most definitely not. I built my car for just over $4k... something that you cannot do with a mustang. Hell, my replacement engine only cost me $350 and that came with a full exhaust, wiring harness, and ECU:-D

Bruce,

I completely agree with that statement. I feel I am a pretty darn quick Corvette driver because I learned to drive in a Mustang. The transition from the Mustang to the Corvette was a "Holy Cow, this car is EASY to drive fast!" moment for me. Everything I learned in the Cobra allowed me to feel extremely comfortable with the Z06 at, and beyond, the limit.

I'll also echo John's comment in that we are talking about E30s, not newer BMW models. E30s have proven setups for fast lap times, a very large aftermarket, dedicated racing series' and are simple to work on.

Yes I was referring to the newer BMW stuff. A friend of mine had a BMW for a while and he was just amazed at how expensive ordinary everyday parts like alternators and starters were. I kept telling him, you're not driving a Chevy anymore. ;-)

The Corvettes are so much lighter and better balanced than a Mustang the people driving them hardly ever get to hone their driving skills on the track.

You can always tell the fast Corvette guys at the track invariably learned how to drive in something else previously. :coolman:

Corvettes p i s s me off. They are so easy to go fast in.

I was at Mont Tremblant last summer for the annual COMSCC Time Trial event there. I was assigned two students, a father and son team sharing a C5 Z-06. No mods....just some track pads, and NT-01's.. Niether of them had ever been to Tremblant before, so they asked if I'd drive the car around for them for their first few laps.....you know....show them the line, the flagging stations, what to look for, and where the tricky sections are.

Anything sub 2:00 is a pretty quick lap at Tremblant. I ran 1:54 (leaving nothing on the table) with my Cobra some years back, and in the Miata this time, I was running very close to 2:00.....2:01's.. The Lap record for my class is 2:03..

I swear I was just putting around, and was putting in 1:58-1:59 laps in that Corvette driving the Miata's lines, and taking my hand off the wheel momentarily to point out where the flag stations were to my students. There was no urgency, no adrenalin, just a few recon laps...

Then I get back into my car and bust my arse to make 2:01-2:03's..

I'm pretty sure I could have easily run quicker laps than my Cobra's times with a just a little bit of seat time and purpose.

Just say no to non-Ford products.:nonono::-D

I still like this used and tweaked 2011 V6 idea. I'm not giving up on Ford not when they are doing so many things right.

I'm in it for the fun and I can only afford just so much fun per year, if I had to switch to another brand than what I grew up with it would make it less fun.

I already shopped them other guys... it made me feel dirty.:dw::nonono:

While vettes are one of the best track cars out there, whatever you do, don't buy one. It is a known fact that as soon as you buy one, your junk shrinks 3 inches. Just ask kevin:lol1:

I did. I've been tracking my 03 Cobra for the last year, and got to the point where I don't want to hack it up to make it perform better. This addiction is powerful, let me tell you. I scoured racing junk.com to find a roller and when I found the right one I bought it.

It was the former 2006 NASA SE Champion in AIX. I just need to put a motor in it, when all's said and done it'll be around 600 to the wheels and 2700 pounds. I think it's the way to go, all the hard work is already done (weight reduction, fire system, cage, suspension, brakes, etc.) and I got it for a fraction of the cost to do that. Now, I have a dedicated race car (That I can work on and fix and is lighter weight so it's easier on brakes, tires etc.) can keep my Cobra nice and still embarrass corvettes & porsches on track.

Half of the fun I have on the track is because I'm behind the wheel of a Mustang.

I have no urge to drive a Corvette on the street and a few seconds on the track won't make me do it either. :burnout:

I will readily admit that I miss sticking the nose of my Cobra under the rear bumper of ANYTHING else on the track. That particular smile would last almost as long as the grease embedded in the wrinkles on my hands from working on it. LOL

If you have some scratch to spend, check this baby out (shields up!).

This is a old World Challenge car (1 of 20 factory GM race cars), so it has all the best stuff. It would cost you $200K + to make this car, but it's up for sale for $50K OBO. 3R racing built the car. It has been wind tunnel and dynamic tested by GM racing. This thing has it all. Someone is taking a bath on this car.

It would make a great STO, 1 or 2 car, and would kill a T1 car.

WOW! There is no question that used race cars are absolutely the best possible value for a track enthusiast type of guy.

New stuff comes out, designs become old, car may not be cutting edge anymore, and it gets put up for sale at a fraction that is outrageously small of the invested capital.

The result is an off the hook amazing car like that, that should make any fan of American performance cars proud!:beer:

50 Gs is still some pretty serious money, but it is also quite a bit less than the price of a BOSS302S and probably faster.

But it's a Chevy....

Just....

Can't....

GO... There...:nonono:

All the winning cars were VW when I was ice racing, I ran a Ford.:bash::smmon:

It's a thing. I just can't help it.

That's a great car and a great buy but no matter how much lipstick you put on it, it's still a Corvette! ;-):poke::p

I knew you'd say something like that;-)

This car is such a steal, I couldn't resist. If I could off load my 38ft money pit (aka Baja). I'd seriously look at this car. I bet you could get this thing for $45K cash.

Operating costs could be kept in check too if you're smart about it.

50 Gs is still some pretty serious money, but it is also quite a bit less than the price of a BOSS302S and probably faster.

Yea, $50K isn't chump change, but this is the steal of the century is you are looking a racecar.

The Boss302S isn't even close to this thing. Still a totally awesome car, just not in the same zipcode.

I thought you bought this a few months ago... no?

It is still listed as for sale on racing junk.com. Is that just the old ad still on there?
