I've been dealing with this since september and Ford has been using my car to test parts/fluids.

1. Up until December/January builds, ford shipped QS.

2. My Clutch assembly, flywheel, pilot bearing, Clutch slave cylinder, and entire transmission were just replaced at 3000 miles... Ford Powertrain Engineering in Michigan contacted my dealer directly and said the ONLY fluid that should go in my new transmission is the QDC.

3. The new transmission/fluid is certainly grinding less when warmed up, but the shifting is notchy... I have frequent issues where I simply cant shift into 1st at a stoplight, am blocked out of 2nd regularly with no skip-shift warning, and a nasty whine.

4. Ford is aware of the whine with QDC and it should be noted that the bulletin on this issue and response from the Hotline when techs call is still:

"Ford is investigating the issue. There is no fix available at this time."

Ford shipped QS in February '11 for my rebuild.. It works a LOT better than whatever was in there before.

DAY1: TISPHO's Pennzoil Syncromesh fluid swap
MILEAGE ON SWAPPED FLUID: 50
SIDE EFFECTS: Audible whine can now be heard from transmission.

So I was tired of waiting for Ford, and I decided to change the fluid to Pennzoil Syncromesh because this was getting ridiculous. I figure ill just use some cheap fluid now, then switch to whatever Ford recommends when the TSB comes out. I am under the presumption that they are currently in the process of producing the right fluid, or contracting with some other company to make it for them. I am starting to lose confidence in Ford, there is no sure date of when the TSB is coming out, and the grinding issue is totally unacceptable.

Fluid Change:
The fluid change was very simple I drove the rear of the car onto some blocks of wood, jacked up the front, made sure the car was leveled, drain the old fluid, and pumped the new fluid in till it reached 1/2 inch under the fill hole.

The Drive:
It was about 40 degrees F when I began the test drive. Right off the line the shifting was 10x better than the old fluid. I drove 25 miles softly (With the original fluid it grinded the most when I drove it softly), then I spent another 25 miles driving it aggressively. THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO GRIND WHATSOEVER WITH THE NEW FLUID.

Cons:
I noticed that the Pennzoil/GM Syncromesh fluid that I put in was extremely light, The light fluid caused an audible whine that becomes less audible as you switch into a higher gear. This whine sounds like a supercharger from a 2003 - 2004 Cobra. Heat may be an issue, after the hard 25 mile drive, I touched the tranny and it felt hot, I was not able to hold my finger on there for more than a second. The shifter area inside the cabin did not feel hot, only warm.

Pros:
Personally, for now, I think that the Pros of switching to this fluid outweigh the cons. It shifts much nicer, and there is absolutely no grind.

Other Thoughts:
When I drained the fluid, it was brown and purple depending on how you looked at it. I noticed an unusual amount of metal flakes inside the oil. Not sure if this is a sign of trouble or not. I will continue to report on this fluid weekly until the TSB is posted.

Those shavings you drained out are one of the first signs Ford would look for when examining a transmission for rebuild. Good luck getting it fixed now.

And I hope you realize that fluid with metal shavings in it can be pumped back in.

Hello fellow 2011 Mustang Manual Transmission Owners

When I purchased my car in September last year, I was unaware of how extremely passionate Mustang owners were about their rides. As so many of us are having clutch and transmission issues (to varying degrees) I've tried to keep us all in the loop with regard to Ford's effort to find solutions. The volume of emails, PM's, and posts to various websites has now become so overwhelming that it is impossible for me to answer each individually. The most robust and informative conversation going on right now is at allfordmustangs.com. It should be noted that Deysha, a Ford Customer Care Representative, monitors and posts updates there regularly and is intimately familiar with the problems we're all experiencing. I encourage you to remain active in the Mustang forum(s) of your choice, but with regard to this particular issue, I strongly advise you follow the sticky thread at allfordmustangs.com: Official 2011 Mustang Manual Transmission Rough Shifting Thread - Ford Mustang Forums

I thought I'd quickly summarize the symptoms, current fixes available, what we know so far, and how best to ensure your car is fixed

SYMPTOMS:
1. Clutch pedal sticks to the floor when fully depressed (Generally, cars built before May 2010)
2. Clutch engagement no longer progressive... more "on/off"... with very little pedal travel causing bucking/jerky launches.
3. Difficult to shift in temperatures below 35 degrees F.
4. Grinding when shifting (1-2 and 2-3 reported most) until car is fully warmed up.
5. Grinding when shifting (1-2 and 2-3 reported most) all the time.
6. Inability to engage gears with clutch pedal fully depressed (non related to skip-shift)

CORRESPONDING SOLUTIONS:
1. Ford will install an updated pedal assembly that solves the problem.
2. No fix for 2011, but it should be noted that 2012 Mustangs have revised clutch assemblies.
3. Ford will change your transmission fluid. (Many owners report success, some report gear whine)
4. Ford may change your transmission fluid. (Some owners report success, some report gear whine)
5. Ford may change your transmission fluid. (Few owners report success, some report gear whine)
6. Ford may replace your clutch assembly and install updated pressure plate bolts.

WHAT WE KNOW:
As most of you already know, if your problems continue after having these applied, there is no other fix as of 03/23/2011.

WHAT SHOULD I DO?
1. Call Customer Care, report your problems, get a case number, ask that they arrange for your dealer to evaluate the car, and be sure to ask for free rental.
2. When you drop the car off, be sure a REPAIR ORDER is filled out and that the symptoms are documented to the tee. Drive the car with a service advisor.
3. If you feel your issues are severe enough that they constitute a safety risk, MAKE SURE THAT IS VISIBLE ON THE REPAIR ORDER.
4. Be prepared for "UNABLE TO REPRODUCE" on the invoice.
5. If your car is not repaired, contact your Customer Care Rep and insist your vehicle be examined by a FSE (engineer). Insist you would like to be present when he/she comes to evaluate your car. Also insist that your Service Manager accompany you. You should all drive both your car and another new one on the lot for comparison.
6. Make it crystal clear to the engineer, the customer care rep, and both your service and sales managers that YOU ARE UNHAPPY WITH YOUR MUSTANG. If you believe your problems pose a safety risk, also make that clear to all parties.
7. Keep all of your Repair Orders and Invoices.

WHAT IF THAT DOESN'T WORK?
1. If your problems are minor, you could simply wait to see if Ford comes up with other fixes. Enjoy your Mustang!!!
2. My personal Customer Care Rep told me Ford is working on a revised clutch assembly for 2011's that should solve the shifting/clutch engagement issues. It should be noted that no other source has been able to confirm this.
3. If you believe your problems pose a safety risk, do not hesitate to report the issue to the NHTSA here: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ivoq/
4. If you are unable to resolve your issues with the Dealer and Customer Care, contact Ford Customer Relations in Michigan. You can request a buy-back or vehicle replacement. Be prepared to receive a letter in 5 days denying your request stating that it does not qualify under your state's lemon law. THIS IS A FORM LETTER AND DO NOT ASSUME THIS IS ACCURATE. Your Customer Care Rep will call and should provide detailed information as to why your car is not being replaced. Be sure to post here if the reason given is "There is a fix coming". If you are told there is a fix coming, demand details.

I hope this is helpful

John

Wow...

I'm new here (joined long ago but never posted), and just stumbled upon this. I bought my GT last July and it drove great up until around October. The shifter started feeling...clunky...and noticeably hard to get into 2nd gear and sometimes into 1st. I knew it had to do with the cold since when the car warmed up, or when it was warmer outside, the problem was lessened. Now I see this isn't just me. Also, I can hear a whining noise, almost sounds like it's got a roots blower...seems to be coming from the trans as well.

Wondering what I should do...wait for something to come from Ford, change the fluid myself, or try to persue something at the local dealership about this.

Call your dealer and ask about the recent TSB that came from ford about a fluid change. if they stonewall contact a ford rep at this link in this other thread on a diff forum
i send you there as i dont want to list every post in that 2K + posted thread :)
but this is her post there
Hi members,

Thank God the internet didn't exist some 40+ years ago when Ford was installing Toploaders, with their thick and heavy "gear lube", in the muscle of the day. It would have broken from the overload of cold weather complaints.

Hahahaha.

Not just that; the gear backlash and "whine" (more like a wail)...

I doubt most of today's pencil pushing pansies could even push one of those clutches to the floor.

I was expecting no issues out of the Getrag and was really looking forward to getting away from Tremec. Sorely disappointed that Ford found a way to screw them up.

Good luck getting it sorted out.

My shifting problems weren't too bad -- there was obviously more effort needed in cold weather, but it was only barely worse than what I would call "normal." When cold, I did get "crunchiness" going into third and sometimes second.

Anyway, I asked to the dealer to change out the fluid via the TSB. They did, and the improvement was very obvious when cold. I recommend it for those who haven't had it done yet.

It's actually closer to 10w40. Check this link for details:

Royal Purple Transmission Lubricant Chart

The Royal Purple information on the link you provided stating XT-M5-QS is 10W40 is incorrect and misleading and would represent the equivalent viscosity to a 10W40 motor oil not gear oil. Motor oil and gear oil are formulated for completely different service. You definitely would not want to run Royal Purple 10W40 motor oil as they recommend in your M82 transmission! Also Royal Purple Synchromax is a replacement for transmissions designed for ATF and while thicker than ATF is much to thin for the M82. As for the Royal Purple 75W90 it has friction modifiers more suited for a differential and also does not meet Ford Spec WSD-M2C200-C or WSS-M2C200-D2.

You definitely do not want to run any of "Synchromesh" transmission fluids from any of the manufactures, Royal Purple, Pennzoil, GM, Amsoil, etc. in your M82. While these will generally work great in manual transmissions designed for ATF they are all to thin for the M82.

API viscosity ratings for gear oils are not directly comparable with those for motor oil, and they are thinner than the figures suggest. For example 75W90 gear oil is actually of equivalent viscosity to a 10W40 motor oil.

Motorcraft XT-M5-QS Ford Spec WSD-M2C200-C is 75W90 gear oil not motor oil.

Check out this Motorcraft site:
Full Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid

For those interested in the low down on transmission fluids for their Mustang M82:
Motorcraft XT-M5-QS MTF 100% Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid is 75W90 Ford Spec WSD-M2C200-C and is the factroy fill for the M82.

Motorcraft Dual Clutch Transmission Fluid XT-11-QDC is straight 75W Ford Spec WSS-M2C200-D2

There is a TSB #11-3-18 to use XT-11-QDC in colder climates which would make sense because it would be thinner at operating temperature. The TSB also states that this fluid may be used in all climates. This would definitly help the tranmssion to shift smoother because of the thinner viscosity at operating temperatuer but could cause a little more gear noise also.

Here is the TSB:
-----------------------------------------------------------
MT82 MANUAL 6-SPEED TRANSMISSION COLD SHIFT EFFORT

TSB 11-3-18

FORD:
2011-2012 Mustang

ISSUE
Some 2011-2012 Mustang vehicles equipped with a MT82 6-speed manual transmission may exhibit increased shift efforts in cold ambient temperatures. This is usually most noticeable in 1st and 2nd gears but may also be noticed in 3rd through 6th gears. The increased shift effort may be the result of the increased viscosity of the transmission fluid in cold weather.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE
Replace the Motorcraft?Full Synthetic Manual Transmission Fluid with 2.6L (2.7 qt) of Motorcraft? Dual Clutch Transmission Fluid. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 308-03A for the transmission fluid draining and filling procedure.

This fluid is suitable for use in all ambient temperatures and seasons, and the Scheduled Maintenance guidelines in the Owner Guide can continue to be followed.

The use of friction modifiers or other fluid additives is not recommended since although they may provide some immediate improvement in cold shift effort, they are likely to result in long term degradation of the synchronizers.
-----------------------------------------------------------

There are a couple of references to using fluids compatible with the TR6060 or TR3650 in this post. Those two transmission are quite different in the internal components and are actually designed to use ATF. Dexron III or Mercon V which are 0W20. Tremec techs also state you can use a synthetic synchromesh MTF fluid in the TR6060, TR3650 and T5 but it would be to thin for the M82. I personally run Amsoil 5W30 100% Synthetic Manual Synchromesh Transmission Fluid in my TR6060 at the direction of Tremec techs and realistically any of the available "Synchromesh" transmission fluids from any of the manufactures, Royal Purple, Pennzoil, GM, Amsoil, etc. will work great in the TR6060, TR3650 or T5 S197 Mustang transmissions.

Amsoil does make Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube 75W90 but does not specifically state it meets Ford Spec WSD-M2C200-C XT-M5-QS. It would probably work as well or better than XT-M5QS but the Motorcraft product is also a top quality full synthetic so it is kind of a moot point and since Amsoil does not currently state their product meets Ford Spec WSD-M2C200-C or WSS-M2C200-D2 I would stick with the Motorcraft fluids in the M82.

i dont know about you, but i didnt buy a 32K car to grind the gears everytime i drive it when the temps are below 50*.:nonono: you must not have the issue with your car or you would know what everyone else is talking about

I've said it before and I'll say it again.
It doesn't matter if Mustangs have historically had trans problems. That doesn't mean Ford shouldn't try to fix it, and it certainly doesn't mean that you should have to deal with it if you want to own a M6 Mustang.

My 04 GT, my 04 Cobra, my 07 C6, my 09 GT500 and now my 11 GT all had a notchy and sometimes light grind when cold. It takes a few miles for the fluid to get a little loose then it shifts like butter. This is normal for all manual vehicles...... WTF.
