I picked up a few oil filters from Mike R at Autonation. He gave me a great price on some ridiculously expensive filters for this car.

Tob,
Interesting that Ford decided to go with a torque spec on this filter.
In the past they were happy with the procedure quoted below..

Install a new engine oil filter.
  • Lubricate the oil filter gasket with clean engine oil and tighten until the seal makes contact.
  • Using a suitable oil filter strap wrench, tighten the filter an additional 270 degrees.

before dealers could just pay the 1000 year buy in, didnt they have svt specific dealerships that had mechanics that had training to work on svt specific vehicles? not sure if it would alleviate this issue but it is crazy that $60k doesnt buy any more give a shit than this

I harbor the exact same sentiment. Ford Performance needs to make an "adjustment" and put a mechanism in place to alleviate issues like this.

Snoop, there were/are reports of oil filters coming loose as well as reported leakage past the seal. When I pulled the bellypan off my car I noticed a few drops of oil hanging off the edge of the oil filter and could follow a trail right to the seal. So from what I see at this point, the torque figure makes sense.

It would be interesting to see how the torque spec relates to the old 3/4 turn procedure. If you get a chance and can remember, can you see how far the filter turns at the recommended torque? Does anyone sell a filter socket for that filter?. I use one on my Ford and my Dad's Toyota and they work great. They just don't seem to offer a lot of sizes.

This is the one I use on my car, it's 93mm and fits the Fram, Wix and NAPA filters (those are the only ones I tried it on). It won't fit the Motorcraft FL-820S filter, but it does fit the filter that came on the car from the factory. Go figure.

Fram Oil Filter Cap Wrench, FM 105. Prettty good deal for under $4.

RockAuto has the MOTORCRAFT FL-2069-ST oil filter for $14.40.

Here's the RockAuto 5% discount code 4494155140626059 good thru July 3, 2016.

I think the filter socket is 74mm with 14 flutes.

Got back early this morning from visiting George at MGW. SVTP's own Travis Hill was there as well. George performed shifter transplants on Travis' Ecobeast as well as my GT350.

I've got plenty of feedback on the MGW GT350 shifter upgrade, having driven the car almost 1,000 miles there with the OEM shifter in place as well as the same on the return trip with George's latest masterpiece installed. If you are looking for precision without any added NVH (yes, I said any) then grab the phone and get an order in. It really is that good.

I'll have a writeup done when I'm out of zombie mode and can pour through some photos. Speaking of which, here's one of Travis driving my car while I hang out the window of George's car taking this photo. Man, it was hard to leave the warm weather!

An update of sorts. I was finally able to spend some time in the car as I put some ~2,000 miles on it driving to Georgia to visit George at MGW and have him install his new GT350 shifter. All in all a great trip.

Drive-wise, I've fallen in love with West Virginia. After leaving gestapo laden NY and PA behind, WV was a GT350 owner's dream. Long slopes, either up or down, with generous curves, this car absolutely soaked it all up with nary a complaint. I made it through almost the entire state at speeds that would be guaranteed bars and shackles further north. Everybody wanted to follow me and we had a train of four or five cars rolling through the state with ease. A simply fantastic drive.

The Recaro seats became torture-like devices once I hit 6 or 7 hours in them. By hour 13 I could have used multiple muscle relaxer shots. I love them for the performance they offer and understand they weren't designed to be the premier long distance travel seat. It is what it is I suppose.

I left the exhaust in loud mode the whole trip. It kept both nearby travelers aware of my presence while also keeping me awake. A good thing as there were a few lane drifters along the way. Of note - this car is a bit of a dog if you aren't in the right gear, requiring downshifts that my GT500 never did. Not complaining, just mentioning my own observations.

I figured I'd pull my front plate once I got out of NY but then decided to leave it on for protection. I did take it off once I was in Georgia. I'm using Craig's GT350 bracket and it worked very well and is very easy to use. Plate goes on or off in seconds and stays put when in place.

Once in Georgia and at MGW's World Headquarters, I decided to take a look inside my FRPP oil separators. Driver side...

Bone dry. Not even any mist.

Passenger side had oil about 3/8" up the sump.

z0514161015.jpg

I then decided to change my oil as George has a couple of lifts in place for installations. Take heed - it's messy no matter how you do it. Get the proper filter socket too as the factory really reefed on these when they installed them.

The drain plug is an interesting piece. A very coarse thread as it is off before you've turned it much at all. It wobbles a bit even when fully seated. As impressive as it is I prefer a steel bolt with a magnet on it.

I brought with me the filter cutter I purchased from Summit Racing last month and it worked perfectly. Once off, I cut the filter open as well as the media inside and stretched it out to see what was collected between the pleats. I've seen worse.

With an empty filter installed, the car took exactly 10 quarts of oil. Dipstick isn't as easy to work with as it could be.

I can't comment fuel economy as I was too busy looking for law enforcement and Google Maps on my phone while carving up mountainous terrain. This car makes some funny noises. I felt better once seated in George's own GT350 and heard the same ones (except for the random "what the hell was that?" which happened a few times).

The drive back with the new shifter was an absolute dream. It was hard to keep speed down. Every on ramp became a test bed. Ridding the car of the factory shifter was like removing a cancerous growth. Somebody at Ford should be on the phone with George trying to negotiate a way to get something like this in place on the assembly line. The car really is that much better with it.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of seeing my favorite FedEx freight guy pull up in front of the house. He was smiling as he walked down my driveway and couldn't wait to see what I was up to.

z0517161322.jpg

I now have in my possession the first Ford Racing GT350 rear seat delete kit sold for public consumption. A HUGE thanks to Mike at BuyFordracing for this one. Mike has been my go to guy for almost three decades now and in this case he helped further the argument for this one to even exist. Mike shared with me that this was not to be, early on anyway. I voiced my concern here, at other sites (thanks Trackmustangsonline), and Mike forwarded a letter I wrote regarding the matter to proper channels at Ford Racing. In a rather beautiful twist of fate, they listened!

z0517161239.jpg

When Mike let me know that things were going to happen, I asked him about the bezels for the seat belts. Since the R model has no rear seat belts, the bezels at the top of the seats have no belt in them. The issue is that you can't buy them without the belt and have to either slit your original bezel to slide the belt out or buy two complete assemblies and cut the belts out. Mike suggested laying low as mention of it might throw a wrench into the mix. Surprisingly enough, somebody at Ford Racing was on top of this one and included the R bezels as well as the rest of the requisite hardware.

z05171613202.jpg

Mike picked up the first of these that became available. The sticker on the back of the "cover" shows it to be #2 of 25. Mike surmised that Ford Racing may have initially ordered 25 of these so it looks like they are carefully monitoring how well they move. After all the noise I made I sure hope they move as many as they can.

Mike also supplied me with one of these gems...

You can order the Ford Racing RSD through any FRPP distributor.

Mike at Buyfordracing, my guy, just happens to be the one I've chosen to deal with for a long, long time. He did all the legwork on this one and I feel had a part in it becoming a reality.

Just a heads up - whoever you buy from, be aware of who and how it will be shipped. That's the trickiest piece of the puzzle with this part. The box is very big and also very light.

Wow I can't believe how much crap is in that filter. The steering wheel will be much easier to install than changing the oil. :)

I took these at the 5.2 Powertrain Reveal last summer...

Any metal plug would be all custom for this application. I don't think we're going back either.

When the 6.7L Powerstroke F250 came out in 2011 it had this same exact drain plug with a plastic oil pan. In late 2012 they went back to a steel pan and bolt drain plug. I believe mostly due to the complaints they received on leaking and unfamiliar mechanics breaking them. Granted the F250 is a vastly higher volume production vehicle where those issues would be more prevalent.

I owned an '03 F250 Powerstroke (I had one of the last 7.3's) and followed the many powertrain debacles that occurred thereafter, including the pan/plug issue of a few years ago. I agree with your sentiment regarding volume and why Ford did a reversal there. I've yet to see a complaint on these cars regarding leakage and we may never see a complaint.

Still doesn't change my view.:)
