I'll probably end up buying a refurbished unit in the near future.

I personally prefer buying factory refurbished units and have always had a good history with it.

The way I see it, anything that was going to break on the machine already broke, and I (hopefully) get the unit with all the defective parts already replaced.

So far, so good with all my refurb PCs.

I buy refurb whenever I can. Most companies put their refurbs through rigorous testing before they go out. I've had a lot of products that are DOA new but never once had a problem with a refurb

My sister-in-law works for Microsoft corporate and got me a discount on a Surface Pro 4 a few weeks ago. Since it's a business write-off I don't care about the price and I still went with a refurb over new.

Dell or HP. IMHO Lenovo are crap, some of the worst made on the market right now. They function ok but that is where their okness ends

This is why I moved away from PCs. It seemed like they were too unreliable anymore, I was getting on average 2 years before a major loss would happen that made it pointless to repair so I would pony up and buy another one.

So far the only great computers I've owned have been the ones I had built custom and so far, my Mac. Which, if it's anything like most of my friends, it should still be running well in 5-8 years.

This. Wifey bought me a Macbook about a year ago, and jesus christ is it fast.

I missed this one. Are the ones you are replacing every 2 years $300 brand new? You can't compare a $300 pc to a $2k macbook.

While they aren't the greatest, as long as I don't do something stupid and break the computer myself, they usually last me 5 years or so. Just gotta keep them clean and free of malware and other crap.

Most people have a hard time doing routine mx on a computer. If you don't buy a piece of crap, generally the product will perform in accordance to mx done for it.
That said, I've moved mostly to Macs. The new Surface Studio might pull me back though.

I think the cheapest computer I have ever bought was $450 (Toshiba), and I bought a factory refurbished, last gen, Macbook for $900 and used boot camp to put Windows 10 on it.

I believe my Dell was the most expensive computer (prior to the mac) I bought but that was back in college and my mom helped pay for half, I think I was out like $350.

My work computer is custom built by our IT guy and it's bad ass. I think he charges us $580 installed, it's been an absolute beast for like 3 years. It's still very fast. If he built laptops, I might have had him build me one but the mac will do fine and hopefully last. Worst case if I need something else in a few years I could probably still get $500 out of it.

I got their box to send it back today after many nightmare calls to their Indian call centers that offer no help and/or can't understand what I'm saying. Furthermore, they expect me to send my laptop in for warranty work with the line of "HP is not responsible for your confidential, proprietary or personal information contained in your product"? No way in hell. They are surely aware of identity theft and the various cases of people's personal files being stolen & posted online, etc, right? Yea, I need a waiver from HP stating that none of my personal files will be opened, viewed, copied, moved, etc.

This is pretty standard stuff anymore. Too many people taking / sending in their laptops and don't have their shit backed up then blame the company techs for not being able to save it. Best thing to do if you have these kind of concerns is have a spare hard drive laying around that you can put in it to send it in for service. If you are certain the hard drive is not the issue you can just take yours out and send the computer in without it. Tell then you are doing that so they know the hard drive is not going to be there and tell the clown on the phone that he needs to be sure to add that to the notes

Holy reading comprehension Batman! Go read my post again. My data is backed up. Once again, my issue is with the HP employees viewing/copying/sharing/etc my personal and/or work data on said HD.

Anyone thinking that these techs don't look at personal files is naive. My friend's brother did it all the time. Anyone recall the recent couple that had a Toyota salesman steal their private video from the guy's phone?

There's also identity theft.

Sadly, the world we live in requires I waste time opening the laptop to pull the HD so that is what I did & now I have to drive to a Fedex place to drop this thing off. F you HP.

I got that ... and I gave you a solution ... perhaps you should read what I wrote again. I gave you a solution, one that you are apparently going to use.

As someone who has been a hardware tech I can guarentee you they look at your files .. mostly looking for porn. You have seen the videos of "girls of Iraq" or "marine women in Iraq" all of those came off computers of military guys who turned their WORK computers in for service and the help desk grabbed the pics off their drive.

I don't know about the particular HP you have but with Dells it is two screws on most of them. The HPs I have worked on have been pretty simple to pull the hard drive out.
