The "he might only be able to afford one car" argument doesn't fly with me. If that were the case, he should of had a more reasonable vehicle for daily driving and weather conditions where he lived. As i said earlier, it's incredibly stupid to drive one of these cars in winter storms, ice, snow, or even hard rain depending on what tire you have.

Your safety should be more important to you than your impulse to have a hot ride. Unfortunately, this kid learned the hard way. Sad.

You live in a area that regularly sees those conditions. This kid didn’t.

These aren't daily driver vehicles no matter where you live. SC sees snow, ice, cold weather all the during the winter months. Just not as often as up here. Right now in the capital city it's only a few degrees north of freezing.

They most definitely are DD’s for a lot of people. It gets to/below freezing every year here (San Antonio), but it ices like this every few years. I’m not buying a “winter” DD for the extreme off chance of it doing this again.

If it’s conditions like THAT and my only mode of transportation is a cobra, someone’s picking me up or I’m staying home...
This is exactly it. I was going to college and working in a town 30 miles from where I lived. I lived with my fiance (now wife) in a trailer. I had a beater that I daily drove and still had my 91GT.

And I did have my beater break down a couple times. A friend let me borrow his truck. It can be done.

I hit 4 cities this week in Illinois, New York, Florida and Texas. Houston was a mess earlier in the week and icy roads shut down the city. In Rockford, IL it was a low temp of zero F and a couple feet of snow. No problems in Rockford due to the plowed roads and salt.

It matters where you live and how prepared the road crews are. A winter beater in Houston is going to sit for about 10 years. A flat bottom boat for flooding is a better investment.

I'm with Sadie on this one.

What’s really crazy about it is that schools along with all the bases were shutdown. Yet the gas station and restaurants near my house were open. I can easily see a manager of some gas station telling his employees that if they don’t show up for work, to look for a different job. I would think one works at a gas station because that is the job they could get and don’t make a “dedicated winter DD” salary. Shitty situations all around and I’ll assume this kid in the Cobra was in something similar. Tragic.

If you can only afford one vehicle, you don't really have a choice. Been there, done that a long time ago when I was about this kids age. Now you can help that out with snow tires and driving more defensively.

That said, do any southern owners even know what a snow tire is since this isn't typical for them. So I could see how this could happen unfortunately.
You can get a 4x4 xj Cherokee for dirt cheap. Or a ranger

A lot of people live by $25 a week (after bills). Your “dirt cheap” is someone else’s fortune.

Honesty it’s disgusting, I have family on both ends of the spectrum of wealth. You know what, each makes assumptions of the other. Whether it be the poor saying the rich can afford or the rich saying the poor should make better decisions.

Bottom line without assumption is this kid lost his life and another has to live with being involved in it. It’s tragic.

No one can fully know the situation and no one is in his shoes but him, it’s easy to play arm chair quarterback, I’m not criticizing anyone in this thread, many of you make valid points, I’m just saying is all.
I’m in college and daily my 01 cobra convertible and the top leaks, I do have a truck because I’m blessed with more than others but I go to school 3 and half hours and 240 miles from home and the cobra is the best transportation for the job and I take care of it the best I can.
Thankfully it has continental dws tires on it but it used to have slick cheap tires on it because the previous owner put them on it. We also don’t know why we was driving, maybe it was an emergency and he couldn’t wait and that was the only car at the time. Bottom line a young man lost his life.

Yeah screw this kid, and anyone who wants to bust their ass and buy something they really want, especially when they live in an area that almost never sees these conditions. He deserved it for not buying a Corolla instead...

Clearly you're irresponsible. If you can't afford to drop thousands on a beater that you have to maintain and find space for, you don't deserve a nice ride.

Define cheap. You won't find one that isn't a POS under $3k, $5k is more likely for not something beat to shit.

Love all the morally superior people here that condemn someone for buying their dream car and not having the money to buy another.

What? Best bet for you would be posting sober from here on out. Where does rice come into play?

The note cost you $100, or the insurance? Aren't you WAY older than 21? If so, why are you having to finance that cheap of a truck?

You only live once, if a dream can be attained and you are happy and do not intend to cause harm to others live the dream. Just remember, nightmares are dreams too.

Depends on where you live, up here in New England many many people do this, buy a winter beater, put minimal insurance on it, and sell it in the spring for about what they paid for it.

Even if you paid $1000, and sold it for $300, that’s $700 for 5 months, or $140 per month.

You, that's what I used to do, when I was old enough to afford it
I've had a..
$125 Grand Prix (only non Ford I've ever owned)
$200 Escort
$400 Explorer
If you are lucky that will last more than one season. My Escort lasted me 3 years. Only did brakes and oil changes, then someone rear-ended me.

Now I just use a daily driver, and the Cobra is for warm weather.
At the age of 22, not sure how many kids can afford a Cobra, insurance, and then a second car on top of that.

Kids, especially guys don't make the best decisions. 99% here surely did something borderline life threatening at that age. Yet a bunch are shitting on a kid for buying his dream car and not having a house, second car, a wife, a career, 3 investment accounts, a second home in the hills, and whatever else they think is required to buy that car. Find it extremely hypocritical if you dug into any of their past, bet they've done the same or worse.

I bought a cheap 2.3 ranger a few years ago so I didn't have to drive my mustang in the winter. Paid $1200 for it and it ran like a champ. Was it the nicest rig out there? No. But it wasn't a total piece of crap and it reliably got from point A to point B. Did I make a lot of money at the time? Nope. Worked two jobs and saved up for it.

I did it too when I was that age, had a $1200 V6 Tbird for awhile with studded snow tires (nickel and dimed the hell out of me), when I had my GT fox. I worked on average 50+ hours a week. Had twice it failed on me, the starter once, and alternator once result in my having to drive my fox in snow/ice. It was sketchy as hell, but I managed. Now if it got totaled and posted on here, we have no shortage of people that would shit on me for driving a Mustang like an idiot.

That said most I worked with could barely afford their single daily that was far from nice. I bet there are plenty on here with a Mustang as their only ride because they don't have room or money for a second "just in case" vehicle.

My whole point is, as car guys it's pretty shitty to shit on someone for buying their dream car and not having a few extra grand laying around for a second vehicle. I lived in apartments before that only allowed one, so I guess I should have sold my car and bought a focus because I may need to drive in bad weather at some point in the distant future.

Tragic story. Hope some young men here can learn from this accident. These cars really are terrible in the snow. If you have to drive in the snow, at least go to Lowes and get some bags of play sand to put in the trunk.
