Hey guys, Im going to look at a 2003 Cobra Convertible with 24,000 miles. The car is about 400 miles away so I can't just go look at it. Everything checks out with this car. The owner has been honest and has answered all my questions. My only concern is he has not changed the oil in the 3 months he has owned it. He sent me a picture of the oil change sticker, it is from 9/2014. He also showed me the dipstick which looks okay from a picture. Now the car has only been driven about 1,500 miles since the oil change. Obviously the car has been sitting but will the engine be okay from not changing the oil in close to 3 years?
Thank you

It will probably be ok, especially if synthetic oil was used. Change it at the soonest possible opportunity.

For low mileage cars the biggest issue the oil gets is fuel and moisture saturation from sitting and only idling to get the car up to temperature.

If you buy the car a nice easy 400mi drive would be great for everything. I would perform scheduled maintenance when you get it home

^^^ This. You'll definitely be fine driving your "new" Cobra home. Once there, change the oil and filter right away. Do any other regular scheduled maintenance needed at the same time. Check the plugs. Check the air filter. Check the fluid levels. If it has a custom tune, check it.

I check this out a little closer..he only had car 3 months and oil sticker is 3yrs?

Is he flipping this for quick sale?

I would 100% do a compression before taking car..these kinda run good on 7 cyls..just a miss/slight spit and spider can happen and some play it off as neeeds a tune up

Thanks for the input guys, most likely the previous owner changed the oil but did not remove the oil change sticker but I have to consider that it might not have been changed. ^He has owned it for 3 months but the oil change sticker is from about 3 years ago.

big red flag he has only owned it 3 months. He may have found something wrong with it, and now trying to dump it on someone. personally I would have it checked by a professional for mechanical issues ....please be careful

Yes get a compression check. I did the mistake of not doing it and got a bad motor :(

The oil will be fine, I have never seen water in my oil when I drain it. My car does not get driven a lot and every time a change my oil with hundreds of miles on it the oil is clean and zero water.

I change the oil once a year. One is running e85. I average 1200 miles on it per year. My other car about 300 per year. No issues here. I agree in getting it checked out thoroughly.
