Definitely a bold move. History will ultimately be the final judge of the success or failure of it. Ford has been taking a beating from shareholders regarding it's languishing stock price and ran the last CEO out of town. The cost-cutting Ex furniture salesman probably felt that a big move needed to be made.

Even though the car segment has been shrinking, it still amounts to millions of cars annually. One less competitor leaves more for everyone else. With Ford not even being part of the car conversation anymore, I worry that they are giving up ground they may never be able to get back.

I know I do not want any of this brake assist, blind spot monitoring, etc garbage nanny shit for the stupid & lazy. I can see some of it on huge trucks & SUVs, but every car does not need a backup cam, monitoring everything & your mom's tits, braking for you because you're texting, etc. I see some Miata guys installing backup cameras & I have to laugh. If you need that on a ****ing Miata, get off the road.

My Jetta is bare bones. Has the camera standard, but no monitoring systems or anything & that works for me.

Id be willing to bet if you polled salesman, you're the minority

He would be. He can say that all he wants but the truth is the sensors and cameras help a lot regardless of vehicle. For the record, I have never had an accident and I have only bumped one car while trying to parallel park downtown, but I will say all the cameras and sensors help a lot. And I'm sure he would wish the other car had a blindspot sensor when they failed to check their blindspot thoroughly and pulled over on you changing lanes. They help prevent accidents so therefore they are ultimately useful.

Yeah, that's the bullshit part. People are already lazy and inattentive drivers and instead of making people better drivers we're just giving them more reason to be lazy an inattentive...

I live in Houston and when i'm stuck on the freeway for over an hour in traffic because some jackass was driving like an idiot, or on their phone... i believe if you cause a wreck it should be jail time, that'd straighten people up in a hurry.

It's not lazy. How many people have gotten in wrecks because they were cranking their neck back trying to see if someone was in their blindspot and the cars stopped in front of them? My brother did that once and sometimes it is just unfortunate as he was trying to check his blindspot and traffic abruptly stopped in front of him. His fault of course, but a blindspot sensor would have helped as well as automatic braking. People aren't perfect and can't sense or see anything and everything.

The big3 are all feeling the squeeze, the volume and margins for cars just don’t keep the lights on, it’s the trucks and SUVs that make the real money. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Dodge and GM follow suit.
Dodge already did with killing the Dart, Avenger and 200. All they have for cars are the Charger, Challenger and 300. Oh the Giulia. But does that really count as mainstream? Marchionne saw the market shifting and pulled out while he still can. It's the reason why we are seeing Fiats with Jeep badges on them here.

well...as a Ford fan I'm sad. i had held out hope they would have built a S550 based sedan, but no. i get it in a fiscal sense, and im sure they have done the market research to justify it. there are rumors the next explorer platform is RWD and there will be a ST model.

so ford, blow me away with SUVs and Trucks now. give me a reason to sell my JEEP SRT.

Yea, should help out Toyota and Honda sell more Camrys and Accords in the future. I still see people who like cars staying in cars. Even with these CUVs and SUVs getting better gas mileage, half of our shared parking lot at work has mainly new Toyota/Honda/Hyundai cars.

Curious how the Ranger does now that the "small" pickup market has been largely handled by Chevy and Toyota.
Sure since it's a truck it'll sell but I wonder if they'll be able to steal a reasonable amount of future/current owners of Tacos and Colorados.
They got back into the NA market quite late for this market. It's been 7-8 years since the last Ranger?

I'm sure I am, but that doesn't make me wrong. The only car I've ever had a backup cam in is the Jetta. Sure, it's great, but if people can't stay out of accidents & drive right without all these nannies then they should not be on the road.

But people literally can't stay out of accident. 3,287 people die every day from car accidents, or 1.3 million per year.

Has that gone up or down since all these nannies became the norm? These nannies have made drivers worse from what I see & people still can't figure out how to properly adjust their mirrors!

I believe car accident have steadily been going down. I get what you are saying and I agree, but I have used most of the new nanny features and they are pretty good. Not very intrusive either, you mostly forget about them until they are really needed.

Nope. I still think we need to be more concerned with teaching people how to drive, the process of getting a license here is laughable at best, and we wonder why we NEED these safety features.
Do kids even have to parallel park for their test anymore? I failed that shit my 1st time. Ran over a cone. Oops!

It has to be attempted.

I don't know what is so hard about parallel parking. I used to parallel park my 20ft enclosed trailer behind a quad cab Ram. Know where you vehicle is, and use your mirrors.

When I did drivers ED. in high school we actually had to do it downtown with just cars that happen to be parked haha

I was fine but the other two idiots that we in my group I thought were going to get me killed. Over the center line constantly, deep into the shoulder. One kid blew a stop sign going 45. Scary stuff. lol

I got my license 22 years ago and didn't have to parallel park...

Its not a modern kid thing. Its harder to get a license now than it was for me. I had to pass an easy written test, pass an easier driving test and bam license with no restrictions. Kids now require drivers ed, 50+ hours of instructed driving and then get restricted licenses for years.

Bad drivers are because people dont give a shit about driving. There is a growing portion of the population that would rather not have to drive. More and more kids dont even want a license.

I'm 27, and literally did not even take a driving test... I took the computer test, and i remember the first question was a 'do not enter" sign and it said "what should you do?" I passed that and got my license, did not have to take an actual driving test. Luckily i am a good driver, but i had friends do the "at home taught" program as well and they're awful drivers.

Then why are they such terrible drivers?
