I'm assuming the difference between "the tick" and piston slap is piston slap goes away after warming up whereas the tick is present all the time?? These engines are noisey by themselves and I think some people get paranoid and mistake piston slap for the "the tick".
Car built in 02/04 - mine did have the tick on the driver's side that showed up at about 6K Miles. Dealer took care of it and have been Tick Free since then.
