My 1971 Boss 351 (18,356 original miles) has been sitting in dry indoor storage for almost 20 years and still looks like the day it was placed there. No rust, no corrosion, not even pitting in the chrome. If the Mach I mentioned above is stored on a wooden and not dirt floor, the same may be true. Of course if things have made a home in the body then all bets are off. As for the market being soft on these cars, maybe the daily drivers, but not the time capsule cars (especially one with 80 original miles) or concours restored show cars.

Bill S.

I have seen nice original (lower mile) and nice restored 71-429's regularly hitting the high $30K's and some into the $40K's but that is where they were 3 years ago when I sold my cars. It does not seem like these cars are leaping up as many other 70 and earlier cars have. I have seen "some" BOSS 351's go a little higher, but they have not appeared to leap either as some of the 70 and earlier cars have over the last 2-3 years. And anything low compression (after 1971) seems to be not be climbing much at all, even the 72 R-Code, which most people aren't even familiar with. $40's for these cars seem to be low especially with only 1255 429CJ's and 611 429SCJ's built in 1971 only.

I found the perfect car for Brian, our road race champion. It is lot#1286, a 2003 Ford Fusion. It was owned by Jack Roush and raced by Mark Martin (finishing 3rd at Watkins Glen!). I see a Bush victory in your future.

I found that, Doc. I am certainly going to be keeping my eye on that car. ;)

I only found one car that I may could afford: A 1976 Mustang 11 with a 92hp 4 cyl. It's green with a slush box tranny (lot#3).

Speaking of Mustang II's, does anyone know of a nice Cobra II, preferably white w/blue stripes (blue w/white could be considered), 302cid for sale? Not a King Cobra which I think came out in 1978 but instead a Cobra II, preferably a 1976 model, it has to be a 302.

Brian:

FYI. Before I bought my R I looked at a brand new Roush road course car they built for Mark Martin. He said it was no better than what they were running and he discarded it. $25k was the price for the rolling chassis. Brand new car mind you! But it would take a considerable effort (not to mention cost) to get it on the track. So I took a pass.

It was a LOT less than I was expecting it to cost!? :read:

The retired NASCAR cars are cheap and plentiful here. NASCAR will be racing the COT cars next year which will make many 2006 cars obsolete (some will go to Busch).

They do run the cars in vintage. I know a few of the racers, and have noticed it can be very costly to campaign one (in vintage where you get paid zero). The tires are expensive (you can't buy them from the race teams anymore). They can go through two sets of rotors in one weekend (plus pads).

I'd think a guy should point to the series that pays a purse. I know a guy that runs one in Busch East(?). It's the feeder series to Busch. You get a sponsor or two and race for prize money.

Sweet car:

My Moms cousin was going to ship down his 1971 Mach 1 (80, yes 80 origional Miles). Its been on blocks in his barn with the interior in boxes since 1971. My Uncle said it looks like it came off the show room floor.

Why would someone take the interior OUT of an 80mi. car, that looks new, just to store it in a barn? I just don't understand that.

I would guess to protect it in a different environment. The barn environment could cause mildew and rodent damage.

As a person who has done restoration work on 'low mileage original' musclecars,

they're never all original. those cars have <100 miles on them because they were drag cars.

Other items that don't seem to last in a "stored" condition, especially for 30+ years are all of the rubber items, control arm bushings, weather strips, seals, etc. They seem to fair better with some sort of use, not just sitting. Many of these rubber items "could" look fine, but if the car is used and they are now flexed, they will quickly crack and fall apart, that was rubber technology from that day. So is a car like this a time capsule? or a car that is complete/correct/original, and ready for a restoration?

That more likely. My Cougar was usable, drivable, and well preserved, but was more ready for restoration than a driven car show kind of car. Although, I didn't notice any issues, or upcoming problems during the 1000 miles I put on it from when I pulled it out, to when I sold it.

The car is in Southern Alberta. Hot Summers and Freezing cold winters. It was to save it from mice mainly. The "Barn" if I do remember (last time I saw it was 20 years ago) is freakin huge and pretty snazzy for a "barn".

^^^^^^^Was/is the barn climate controlled?, dehumidified? that is the key. If it is not, every metal part on that car has rusted if it was not originally painted or coated. If that is the case, this car is an original, complete 1971 351C Mach 1 with ultra low miles, ready for restoration. Any assy. line markings or paint daubs on suspension pieces are well rusted over from humidity/moisture and would required "de-rusting" to even identify what markings were originally there. All aluminum parts, alternator, dist. housing, starter nose, possibly the carb. body, trans. case if an auto., etc. would also be oxidized from moisture/humidity.

It is climate controlled for sure. My Uncle saw it a month ago and it is still mint. The cars owner is one of the most anal people you could ever meet (when it comes to cars and bikes) and welding.

If it is climate controlled, that changes everything! I'll bet it is nice! Most barns are not climate controlled? are they?

What color is it? ram air? side stripes?

I have no intention of buying it, I meant it was something I want to see and watch sell. Sorry for misleading you. I am not going down there to buy anything, no way, no how. ;)

That's good to know because I'd hate to see you buy something inflated 4-600% just because it's at BJ!!! :-D

I will most likely go to the West Palm one this year since I missed it last year.
I go for the whole experience of it and to snap some pics of all the badazz cars. I could probably afford anything under the 40k mark if I really wanted to, but I always picture myself going back there one day sitting in the VIP section with a 6 or 7-figure account and a hole in my pocket!
