NasteeNate, those flares are IRCM's (Infra-red counter measures). They are present in nearly any military aircraft that flies- fixed or rotary wing. [helps] Prevents heat seeking missiles from locking on the engine exhaust...it gives an alternative heat source to [hopefully] lock onto.
