anyone bored or honed their block just a few thousandths to get better piston to wall clearance with stock pistons for top speed runs?

Yes.
In the early years a few people did just that. But now that so many better pistons are available everybody upgrades as long as they have the engine apart.

Take that heavy POS iron block out and throw it in the trash. Lose 70lbs using a aluminum block and throw in some pistons better than the Zollner one's.

ok 1) can the aluminum blocks hold as much boost as an iron block can? id love to lose the weight but only as long as they can handle whatever i want to throw at it. 2) whats the average price of just replacing pistons and honing/boring the block?

1. Teksid blocks can hold 1500+hp

2. New pistons $700-900 / $250-300 to bore and clean up the block

Yes, you can run out and get a flexi-hone and take a few passes and measure each time until you get the clearance you need. I would keep it around .0025 - .0035" PWC. Make sure you maintain a 45 degree cross hatch with the hone. CP and diamond pistons seem to work well

You iron block is fine and will be way more durable, stable and stiffer then an aluminum one :rollseyes

what is the stock piston to wall clearance? and anyone know why they made it so tight to begin with? and thanks for all the replies so far i think ill stick with the iron block and just try honing it out.

The stock piston to wall clearance is .001" on a 4.6 which is extremely tight for a high hp engine. It was done to reduce piston blow-by improving emissions.

Ford also never intended for every 03/04 owner to install smaller uppers, bigger lowers,ported blowers, and put every bolt on known to man on their rides {esp with the original sticker price they came with}

But if your going in there, you would def. benefit from a larger bore, and high quality ringset..

holy shit, thats a tight clearance. the rule of thumb is .001 for every 100 CI of displacement. so .0025-.003 is what it should be.
