Hey guys so ive been trying to find the source of a light tapping that ive been having for a couple weeks now. You can only hear it at idle and when its at operating temp. When its cold it doesnt make the tapping sound, only until it gets to or close to op temp. At idle if i feather the throttle a bit it does change with throttle but after about 1100k rpms i cant hear it. Also the tap is not really consistent. Even when its at operating temp sometimes it will go away and come back and it can go from a taptaptap to a tap...taptap..tap. I removed the oil fill cap today and put my ear to it and could clearly hear something going on inside the head. You can hear it under the car and by the wheel well too. Right now my assumptions are a bad lash adjuster, piston slap, or a valve or a valve guide. Im kinda leaning towards maybe piston slap since it does it only when warm and the fact the you can hear it by the wheel well but if it were piston slap wouldnt it make it all the time and get worse when driving? I dont know and would appreciate any input on what it might be or what i should do next. The engine has 150k on it and the mods on it are cai, lethal return fuel system, id1050s, and a 2.8 upper. Oil is 5w30. No head cooling mod.
