Read an article States may ban credit checks on job applicants - Yahoo! News stating some states wanting to ban potential employers for running credit checks and using them as bias against a candidate for employment. I can kind of see both sides, there was one guy in the article who was told by an interviewer, "If you have bad credit, you will steal from me". What are your thoughts?

If they can't manage their own money I certainly don't want them managing mine. I run them on everyone I hire. Edit: That have the ability to make decisions, handle cash, and purchase product.

A job I was trying for a few months back ran a credit check, background check, and drug test on me after the 1st interview, and that was the procedure to simply become 'eligible' for the 2nd interview! Everything checked out OK, but another candidate beat me out. Fast forward to a week ago, and I got a job offer without any of the aforementioned hurdles. Every employer is indeed unique. :smmon:

I'm an executive and have never allowed a credit check. Background check, references, sure. But my money is my money, my employer has (IMO) no right to know my financial situation. Hasn't been a problem so far.

It also depends on what you do for a living, if your a bank teller, cashier or someone who has direct contact with money may be easier tempted to steal than someone who only see's money on a balance sheet.

So as mentioned, it is appropriate in some situations and not in others.

I have worked in casinos for years and you have to keep your credit fairly clean in order to keep your gaming license current. I really don't see where the correlation is. There is so much more involved in having bad credit than not paying your bills or being in debt. People with good credit but with high debt would seemingly be just as predisposed to steal as the people who have bad credit.

I vote no for credit checks. If its a criteria to be considered for employment then it can also be the reason you don't get a job. A lot of people have extenuating circumstances surrounded low credit scores. The banks are affecting people's credit scores greatly by reducing their credit lines. I could maybe understand a credit check if you are taking some form of law enforcement position.

I don't care one way or the other. I would have a problem if they denied me a job because of it without talking to me about it. In today's economy a credit score isn't necessarily a valid measure of someone's integrity or how well they handle their finances. All it tells you is if they paid their bills or not and they may be doing all they can. Denying them the job because they're broke doesn't help anything.

Depends on the job you are going for...IE if you are going to need to attain a Secret clearance or above for that job. If its for a job at McD's who cares...if its at a job where you are going to be handling "sensitive" information I think you gotta do it.

if/when I have a business I will run a credit check on every employee. I doubt it will be the final say one way or another but there are a LOT of things that a credit report will show that should be part of the decision making process.

for the most part, the biggest issue that businesses deal with is employee theft. whether it is office supplies that people think will not be missed, parts going out the back door (auto supply for ex.) or a bartender/waiter giving away free food/drinks to their freinds it is all employee theft if not done with permission.

if you are not honest enough to manage your credit, or pass a background it is not likely you will ever work in a business I control

It's another tool to help prevent bad hires. I have certainly overlooked credit issue if the person has other characteristics/qualities I am looking for. But if it comes down to two equally qualified people and one is behind on his mortgage, has repossessed vehicles, unpaid utilities, judgments, multiple charge-offs, garnishments :shrug::shrug::shrug::shrug: Sorry!!!! I'm going with the other candidate.

I don't think it's fair for someone who had good credit a few years ago. Made above min. amount payments to his credit cards and car loans only to become unemployed and leave everything to hit the fan. I had no choice. However, my credit shows that I've paid off all my car loans when I sold the cars, not necessarily with my own $ but the buyers'. I hope that will at least give me some leverage.

it shouldnt be the only thing to go by and it normally isnt, but it's a good indication of someones character. i know a bunch of you have bad credit on here but honestly it shows bad decisions, puting priority to some car no matter how much debt it'll put you in. Not a good sign.
Like others have said, if you can't simply manage your own money..i don't want you in charge of making money for me.

Well let's see you are doing fine and never miss a payment on any loan car, house etc then one day you lose your job or get injured...oops now you've lost your car and house and your credit sucks and now no one will hire you since your credit is bad so I guess you have no choice but to crawl under a rock and die. People want to punish others for bad credit more than they want to punish murderers, rapist and thieves...pathetic!

I would starve before I stole from anyone...I hate thieves.

If you have ever had a loan, paid bills, rent, etc. you have a score. It really has very little to do with credit.

Some people dont need loans. Some people own and dont rent. You dont need your ss # to get cable.

I have a credit score, but some people dont. They can run there credit and it comes up 0! This is my goal eventually.

US Gov does the same thing on any GOV employee with a clearance, it just doesn't show up on a report. except congress, the senate and the president. they don't care about those folks, I mean they only run the ****ing country.

If you have ever had a loan, paid bills, rent, etc. you have a score. It really has very little to do with credit.

don't know a lot about how credit scores work do ya there sport?

a LOAN is credit.

your rent may or may not get reported to the credit bureau, usually it doesn't. Your ADDRESS will but unless your rental company reports it your rent payments will not go into your credit score.

by BILLS I am assuming you mean utility bills and they also, do NOT show up on your credit report unless you were late and they went into collections and you didn't pay them off before a collection agency reported to the credit bureau.

your credit score is ALL about credit. credit cards, loans of any type, and negative reporting by collection agencies.

so if you have never had a loan, credit card, or been to collections, you will not have a score or it will be very very low. Things like RENT will give you a reference if someone wants to call your landlord but it has zero affect on your credit score
