Hahaha.
I should have called it “Ford will offer limited edition lightweight GT500”.

Dunno how thats "working" when the majority are talking shit about it.Car hasn't even hit the road yet and......
Ford's $0 marketing is working.
I agree in many ways with what you said, BUT that's not why I bought my 13 GT 500. I bought it because I wanted a Shelby, a big block, bad ass car that ripped it up on the street. I never plan on going to the track with it, road course or dragstrip. I drove a GT350 R at the Pocono Race track for 6 laps, the car has unbelievable handling, incredibly stable, etc, everything you would ever want in a track car !! EXCEPT it needed a supercharger, something to make it faster. So I started looking for a 13 GT500. 2k later in motor mods I'm at 702 at the wheels with 730 lbs of torque. That is what I wanted, stupid horsepower. Love the track capability from the new GT500 and GT350, just not exactly where I wanted to put my moneyI can tell you this, I still own my '14 GT500 and not selling anytime soon as I feel it was just one of those cars that made a statement in the american performance car market. But 13COBRA is correct, I also owned a '16 GT350 and let me tell you the driving experience was that much superior over my '14 in many ways, but especially the suspension. I got rid of it because I felt it just needed more power for what I mainly would use it for, yea yea I almost threw a Whipple on it but knowing the new GT500 was coming sooner than later, I decided to trade the car in and not throw $15k+ or more into another car like I did my '14 that you will never get back. ($62Kish for base GT350 + $15k in power adder/supporting mods=$75kish invested)
Here we are now and the GT500 is here with great factory rated HP, and will most likely drive and handle way better than my GT350 including the fact it weighs out more. There is no denying she is a bit heavy than most would like to see, but in reality it was never going to weigh under 4k lbs unless many other lighter more expensive components were addressed, ultimately driving cost higher.
I’ll take that as a challengeFor those that are buying the new GT500 and intend to take it road racing... you have big balls or a large bank account.

FWIW I think the car's gonna rip it up well. But its all the gnarly shit that can happen on a road course and beer-can a nice car quickly. Definitely look to see if anyone offers a track day insurance policy. We'll see how i feel after ripping on one of Fords demo vehicles at the track day
Let me know when you're going, and I'll come with!I paid the insurance with the idea of letting it rip at the GT350 Track Attack. I plan to do the same at the GT500 Track Attack and can't...****ing...wait.
Looks like it'll be summer 2020 - that'd be great Nick.

Seriously? You think the orginal Boss 302 was built to drag race and not for Trans Am? Was Carol Shelby out there pounding the strip in his GT350 and GT500 cars? Is that what made him famous? Was Steve McQueen ripping around in a Highland Green GT because he was all about that Mexico life?

As for Fox Body racing... Have you not heard of AIX, Mustang x Camaro Challenge or any of the other pony car focused race series by NASA? Who do you think is buying all those Griggs Racing and Maximum Motorsports suspension parts?

Id say Fords history with the mustang was pretty split in the 60's/70's (boss 302&429), 80's?? who cares?, 90's/sn95 was definitely track focused, s197 was focused on providing to old men who liked nostalgia, the 13/14 being all of the above, and then of course gt350 on track only
Having road raced S-197 cars for years, I may be a bit biased here, but I'd say it even started as soon as the S-197 chassis came out. The 2011 +, especially 2013 + mustangs were incredibly capable road racing cars, and then take the Boss 302 on top of that. The pre 2020 GT500 was never meant to go around a corner, and anyone who thinks it was is kidding themselves, but as a whole that is a very competent chassis.
And not to just take our word for it, on any given track weekend, the top 3 cars, hands down are Miatas, porches and mustangs (of all years).
Have you done autocross or road racing in a stock fox-body (drum brakes) or SN-95? You can make those cars whatever you want, but they certainly weren't built for it like some modern cars are.
That auto and 650 HP is like cheating and I bet the GT500 will be faster around like 4 like drivers
