U say he is about to turn 15 right and he wont drive the car till he is 16? or u are gonna allow him to drive with an adult till he is 16, if that is the case i say go for it by all means that will give him time to adjust to it and it will give u an idea on how he will handle the car.

I agree there is nothing wrong with a teenager getting a high horse power car as long as he/she is smart and knows the power the car has.

Me 18
Car 74 maverick
Hp= est 490+ rwhp

Problems= Scared shitless of it!

Many of us are in the same dilemma as you. I love the hell out of my son, and want nothing more than to see the smiles when I give him something he wants dearly, but sometimes you just have to THINK about what is more important. We have all been there, and while it is true that it is almost as easy to wreck a K car as a V8, everyone knows about the crazy temptations that come with a high performance car, especially in HS when image is everything and hormones are raging. I definately agree with the overall responses here that you need the put the "coolness, popularity, I love you dad", factors aside when making this decision. I too grew up riding and racing dirbikes from the age of 12, and had many friends that did as well. Trust me, it doesn't mean a hill of beans when peer pressure, and REAL power come into play.

As far as insurance goes, it might or might not fly, just have to give it a try. I know my insurance company always asks about the size of engine and hp, regardless of car make when adding a car to policy.

My advice would be to buy the car for him put it in a garage. Then get him to save up a bit of money and go help him buy a beater, tell him that if he can take good care of the other car and after a period of time he hasnt gotten any speeding tickets, wrecked it etc. etc. then let him have the mustang.

I know personally if my dad had of let me buy the 89 LX I was about to buy I would probably have been in a serious accident by now. However when the time came to buy a car he asked the I let him take care of it for me, so I gave him the money, two days later he came back with a 99 V6 5spd which he paid extra for. I was dissapointed at the time however now I understand why he did it, and hell 3 years later I got my cobra so Im happy.

it looks like a nce ride, but for a first car no. maybe a 4cyl or 6cyl is a better choice. just stay away from the hondas. a v8 taks disipline.

no mention in the as of any new front end suspension work. from exep. the 4 and 6 cylinder chasis will not take prolonged abuse from a 8 cylinder engine. i would stray away. you can can a lot of fox bodies with 8 cylinders stock for the same cash....

my vote ........... NNNNOOOO!!!!

thats just me

ps....
get him a 74 ghia or something and really save money..(gas insurance, tickets, lawsuites, and plain stupidity)))

pss one more thing....we told you so!!

I was 18, still in high school when i bought my 33k miles BLACK 93 COBRA. I bought it myself and paid for it myself. Only help I had was getting a co-signer for the loan. But all money was supported by me. Im now 22 with a 2003 Cobra (Bought this baby by myself with no co-signers and making all payments). As a young driver you do get tempted to do alot of high speed driving. Fortunetly for me, I knew my limits and nothing bad has ever happened. You have to know more or less how your son is, if you can trust him. Then go ahead and buy it. But like others said, make him have some responsibilty for paying it or immediately let him know that there will be consequences if he doesn't act responsibly. Like taking the car away, the first time for a month or two. Then if something happends again, take the car, and place it in the autotrader the following day and sell the bad boy. That would be a lessoned learn.

he would be payin for insurance... i just called this guy, and i asked him about the front suspension, and he said he replaced the front and back suspension, and he said he would let me bring it to the mechanic of my choice to have them check the engine swap and the suspension, and he also said he would let it go for 4,850

ya swapping a 4 cyl to 5.0 ain't hard i did it.i had a 89' conv lx 5.0 and the rearend slide out from under me at about 60 mph on interstate and after a few 360's i smacked the wall with front.so i bought a 87 4cyl lx hatchback and swapped everything.it all just bolts right up.all the bolt holes are there.u don't have to mod anything.i swapped everything down to the brake lines and fuel lines.computer and wire package just bolts right up too.it is now a complete 89 5.0 but on title it looks like a 87 4 cylinder.i was so proud of myself.i've never done something that major before.:beer:

sounds like a great deal, if you've got a some extra dough lying around, scoop up the car and let it sit (even if you have to tell him something is broken with it for the time behind), grab up a beater for a couple hundred and let him drive it, once hes shown he can be responsible maybe its time to bring out the 5.0....

dumb kids will get into trouble with any car, it wont matter if it has a 1.8L engine or a 5.0L under the hood

good luck

I know now that my dad was wise letting me drive my truck with the inline 6 for a year... If we would have directly swapped my big block in i would be dead probalyl right now..:)

My vote, no. Buy him a 4banger lx or somthing. Then do a father/son 5.0 swap:thumbsup:

well heres my .02 although its more like $2.50 in length, at 15 my parents split and me and my dad started spending more time together, when he was young he had a 454 67 Camaro and i always talked to him about it and asked him to hear more stories blah blah... he had bought my mom a 94 GT vert triple black with the aode before the split which was laying around and he said if i came up with 3500$ by the time i got my license he would let me have it, but i had to pay my own insurance and it was in minor disrepair, i brought it back as much as i could with minimal modding, exhaust intake, pulleys... that was a year and a half ago. 2 months ago i traded the good old 94 in with 155,000 miles (30k of which were mine) because i happened to find a deal so good that my dad was actually listening while i went on and on about it. It was a friend's co-worker's 98 Cobra that he was trying to sell me for $22,000, i obviously had no means to get 22 grand and had told him a couple times i was interested but unable. well after he traded it on a lightning i drove down with a friend to ft lauderdale (about an hour or so away) on a friday and after a couple of days of negotiating we took the cobra home on the following monday (i make all the payments, insurance and he gives me a tank of gas a week for driving my sister to and from school), u can read my sig and it will tell u alittle bit but with the current set up the car is putting about 425hp to the wheels. my dad was like u, very concerned but understood what it meant to me and how much responsibility i had shown in the past year with the 94, it comes down to the kid and slapping alot of financial and maintenance responsibility on him in my mind, i love my car and i love my dad but i would love him even if he didnt get me the cobra.

sorry for the length, thought it might help u out with ur decision :)
