because...it happened two weeks after the elections...?

And you're not open to the possibility that someone in the union said "They're not likely to give in; don't push it until the election's over?"

Someone (probably everyone) had to know that closing the plant was a possibliity, management would have wanted them to know what they were up against, and not kept it secret.

if the company is privately held than how would anyone have access to those astonishing raises management supposedly gave themselves?

their operating costs were extremely high and sales weren't covering them. before a few days ago, i cant remember the last time i bought a box of hostess anything. maybe a couple of years ago to try out something i hadnt had before. i think it was the choco filled twinkies. but it certainly wasnt a regular purchase. not even as a snack from 711.

I love their pies, bought an apple one yesterday. Problem is I only buy maybe one a year because I eat very healthy. I think I will make an exception and buy a lemon one today to, its a fried pie covered in glaze. So good.

One of their distributors shares the building our church uses. They have been fighting bankruptcy (the distributor) for a few years now. I expect to find out tomorrow that they might be shutting down and vacating our building.

Hmmmm.... who REALLY was bleeding this company dry. Looks like the union fat cats were doing a pretty good job of it themselves...

They're going into mediation, this will be resolved or they'll be sold. My brother was telling me that hostess hasn't" payed into the pension fund for over a year and the last time they threatened bankruptcy the CEO tried to give himself a 2 million dollar raise the day before filing, but he got caught.

The company had 2.5 billion dollars in sales last year, who would of thought theres that much money in tasty treats.

c'mon now. just look at all the fat lard asses out there. 60% of the nation is overweight and/or suffers from obesity because of junk food like "these tasty treats".

i enjoy a twinkie or cupcake or suzy q every now and then, but only in moderation.

not too hard to see how hostess can bring in that kind of money.

Arbitration failed yesterday. Hostess will be going back to court for approval to proceed with the bankruptcy/sell off plan. Word is strong that it will be bought by Mexican company, like U.M. said.

Found out yesterday that some employees of a local Hostess distributor tried to break into the building and some delivery trucks.

Looks like Canadians will still have Twinkies!

Rest easy, Canada: Your Twinkie supply is safe

The Globe and Mail said:
There are plenty of reasons to visit Canada. We have beautiful scenery, a vibrant culture and … Twinkies.

Fans of Twinkies have been feverishly hoarding packets of the spongy snack amid the demise of its Texas-based producer Hostess Brands. Some opportunists have even started selling their stocks online at jacked up prices. According to Associated Press, boxes of Twinkies, which usually retail $5 for a box of 10, were selling for hundreds of dollars on eBay and Craigslist.

But while production of the frosting-filled cakes winds down in the United States, Canadians will face no shortage of supply.

That’s because in Canada the trademark and rights to the Hostess Twinkies brand belongs to dairy processor Saputo Inc., which manufactures the snacks itself, according to Bloomberg. “It’s totally separate,” Sandy Vassiadis, a spokeswoman for Saputo, told the news agency. “We own the rights in Canada so what’s happening in the U.S. doesn’t affect us.”

The news had U.S. websites Salon and the Consumerist joking that Americans now have another reason to move to Canada. Hostess, which sought approval from a U.S. bankruptcy court to shut down, has begun firing employees after last-ditch efforts this week to negotiate an agreement with its bakers’ union were unsuccessful, Bloomberg reports.

Twinkies, however, are famously resilient. So it’s perhaps no surprise that regardless of what happens with Hostess Brands, the convenience store snack will live on.
