You walk into a convenient store and purchase a 24oz tall boy beer. Every single store here will either place the tall beer inside a brown bag or offer a brown bag. Is the brown bag common up north? Yes this is a serious thread and question.

Lol from what I heard it's to hide your drinking in public...has nothing to do with carrying it home...you can carry a beer or beers beer openly until you crack it open. Then it's drinking in public which is illegal.

They do it in my area also (both Iowa and Illinois). Most retailers seem to think it's the law, but it largely is not at all.
