I'm considering adding a truck to the stable as my DD. Problem is, I've never owned a truck before and have never really considered one, so I feel a bit blind. I know SVTP is a bit biased towards Fords (for obvious reasons), but I'd like to get opinions as I've seen many members with trucks.

I'm looking to keep the purchase sub $30k. Some requirements I have:
    • While I have no immediate need to tow, I'd like to keep the option open to tow a boat (no bigger than 24')
    • I've got a kid on the way, so 4 door is a must
    • Decent MPG. I don't drive a lot, but would like to not get 10 MPG

At this time, the front runner seems to be a 2015-2017 F150 3.5 Ecoboost. All my research shows that it ticks all the right boxes. Anything else I should be cross shopping? Or anything I should look for or consider with F150s?

Ford or Ram for a 1500 sized truck.

If you're not towing, 2.7EB. They should be even cheaper than the 3.5.

Just to throw out a dark horse, Toyota makes a great reliable product in the Tundra, but it doesnt have anywhere near the grunt of a 3.5 EB.

A Double Cab 6.5' Bed can tow 10,000lbs though so there is that. The larger Crewmax cab only comes with a 5.5' bed which can be a no go depending on how regularly you think you'll be throwing stuff in the bed. Owning a truck is fun, I miss my 1993 Toyota pickup all the time.

The EB and Coyote (to 2017 at least) have proven to be very reliable as well. plus if you go Coyote, your a Roush blower kit away from good power.

I’d skip on ecobust and go 5.0

Tundra is a good option too but gets even worse mpg

Id go Ram, simply because dollar for dollar you will get a higher equipped truck.

The tundra is great but is dated in comparison to both ford and ram

While I have no immediate need to tow, I'd love to keep the option open.

EcoBoost with a tune or Roush blower kit... the dilemma is rough....

I haven't even looked into the Rams. My BIL has a new Ram Longhorn and it's interior is amazing. I'll have to check to see what Rams have to offer in my price range.

15-17 F150. All three engines are good choices. From what I’ve seen 5.0 and 3.5 get about the same mileage. 2.7 will get you better mileage I’m not sure the tow rating on a 2.7.

If you keep things for 10+ years, I'd go with a 5.0L, if you keep things 3-6 years I'd go with a 3.5L EcoBoost.

Can’t be too many used 2.7 A10 CC’s available yet. But that would tick all the boxes aside from price.

Used 3.5 EB will do it all but MPG isn’t great unless you drive it like a Grandpa and even then you’ll probably be around 15-16 around town.

Drive everything - now is the time. See what you like and rank your priorities.

F150 3.5 Eco......simply because you mentioned towing. 2.7 if not towing.

Ram "Classic" with the 5.7, 3.92 gears, and 8 speed. This is an amazing combo along with the coil rear suspension. Nothing compares. The truck handles smaller than it really is.. pleasure to drive and sounds fantastic. Interior is very very good as well.

Having test driven them all recently my money would go to a 1500 ram as well. Their build quality isn’t sub-par anymore and, IMO, it’s the best truck among the domestic three right now, dollar for dollar.

The combo of the 5.7, 8 speed, interior and suspension is excellent.

I have a bad track record of not keeping things as long as I anticipate. I'm curious to know what the issue are wit the 3.5's after 3-6 years?

My 18 2.7 with 11k has been great. Getting about 23 around town with the AC on all the time. I don’t tow anything thought. I really like this truck.

I'll say Dodge would be my next choice if I didn't get a Ford. Sexy For Sure. Toyota makes some great looking and said to be long lasting but not sure I could cross that bridge.

My '15 F150 3.5EB Screw with canned 5 star tune and exhaust went 12.99 @ 104. Haven't had the time or extra piss money to tune my '17 with the 10 speed auto yet.....but can't wait. F-150 or bust homie.

My guess would be turbos or cam phasers. But 13Cobra would have a better answer.

Toyota’s design though is outdated compared to the big three. Especially on the interiors.
