I just recently bought a MacBook Pro and was wondering if I should get antivirus software and any other security.

i don't even have my firewall turned on, and not currently using any a/v, spyware, adware of malware detector software. Been problem free since I started using a macbook pro and an iMac in spring 2011.

no viruses, issues or other typical pc problems here!

None. this is 2013, if youre still getting viruses, you should stop looking at midget tranny bestiality porn tubes, and try to stick with good ol fashioned porn tube sites. Youre digging too deep my friend, the internet gets into some dark dark places and thats where the trojans/viruses lurk.

Same was with my PC. I have half a brain +some, I dont need an antivirus. Last time I ran an AV suite was the win98 days.

I have a built win 7 pc and a macbook air. If you picked up a virus now you need to take a pc class .

All true and 100% spot on. Keep your Java updated too if you must have it on your PC. Viruses and spyware have a direct correlation to your Internet surfing habits.

User for 7 years here... no AV... I'm behind a CIPAFilter so my firewall is pretty open but I have a few things still on. Never had any issues..

I would never run windows without something running... bit too many times to do that. Even now occasionally, through no fault of my own, a legit site will be hosting something nasty and Security Essentials blocks it. You don't want to see what happens when I go browsing at work to populate blacklist databases with new sites... google results are far from being safe/clean.

My Mac isn't entirely safe (I run 10.8.3 *beta*) and it's always up to date.... java is removed and I watch several news sources closely (ex: isc.sans.edu) so when a new threat pops up I can check to see if I am impacted or not. I'm sure the days of getting away with doing nothing on a mac are short lived but for now it's nice.

If you practice safe surf and e-mail tractics, anti-virus software is rarely needed.

That's not to say you can't get a virus of course, but I never have on any of my mac's or PC's.

The biggest thing is to not open e-mail from people you don't know and stay away from peer to peer and torrent sites. Those files are usually riddled with spamware, trojans etc.

Excellent advice, Jason. That's been my credo for years. It's amazing how many people pretty much open any email they receive, right down to clicking on any internal links. But the bad guys are getting more and more professional and slick. Just the other day I got an email from a company I do business. Looked about as real as they come. I hovered my mouse over the internal link like I always do and sure enough, it was bogus. IMO since it is always at least possible to get bitten by a virus, it makes absolute sense to at least install a good "free" anti-virus program. I personally use Norton Internet Security (under $20.) which contains their anti-virus software.

Never a problem. I'm on my fifth Mac based system and I am not currently running anything internal. Just a router (without the open source hackworthy backdoor).

I do run a backup hardrive that is not kept plugged into the PC all the time, and is not stored in the same building either. And I rotate among three drives so if even two backup drives fail, are stolen, or burn with the house all my files are safe.
