Honestly, easiest thing is to just register it out of state. If you have a family member that lives out of state that's the best way. If not just open an LLC in a state that doesn't have smog/emissions testing and title the car under the business entity. This will get you out of state license plates and you won't be subject to smog testing in CA.

Swapping tunes, swapping parts, dealing with cops and EPA people........**** all that.

So I heard some people out here in NY have been registering their cars in Montana. Maybe someone here knows more about it than I do, but my buddy said you open an LLC and pay a one time fee and you register your car there and that’s it. No emissions BS.

Sooner or later I am sure the fun police, ie state or feds will close this loophole or scrutinize vehicle registrations more closely.

I agree with you. It sounded too easy and too good to be true. I told my buddy I won’t even bother trying because my employer wouldn’t be happy if they found out. He knows 3 people who did it last year.

how does insurance work than?

That’s what I’m not sure about, but right after my buddy said people were doing it I realized I had seen a few random vehicles driving out here with Montana plates. I’m pretty good with identifying what state each plate is from and Montana isn’t a common one I’ve seen at work so I remember being like wtf and seeing it was a Montana plate.

Which is why I posted my advice. I don't get why some are pushing for out of state registrations on this car when it is NOT a big deal to put it back to stock for the smog test. It's a mildly modded motor! Really simple to task, and the OP gets a fresh tune (with device) in the process. Just do it right and avoid potential registration issues later. JMO!

There is some incorrect information being given here that I'll try to correct.

Fist off you can't simply re-flash your computer with the stock tune from a handheld, swap the injectors, maf and go pass smog.

Why? Because the check sum on your vin will change and you'll be sent to the state Ref for a modified ecu. This is how they check for a modified ecu fyi.

I know someone dealing with a similar problem. Flashed the stock tune back in and still got nailed.

People claiming they've done it are either lying or somehow snuck through before the new procedures were fully implemented.

Now as for flashing the ecu a dealer may or may not be able to help you. You can't toss in a stock maf and injectors and drive down to the dealer and have them flash it. If it drives it will be like shit and you take the chance of engine damage.

You'll need to have the car towed to the dealer because not one that I've found can bench flash your ecu. I've literally called 3 in my area and all said they don't have that capability. If you can find one that's a huge plus.

The other option is a new ecu from someone like flagship one. You'll need Forescan to reprogram your keys too. You might be able to send it to them to be flashed with the stock tune.

This would save the tow to the dealer and may even save some money when you total it all up.

I would keep the jlt because it's got a carb number. Buy an OE maf, injectors, elbow, and pulley and smog it.

Yes the pulley guard can work but why risk it when you're already this deep into de modding the car?

Good luck.

Outstanding advice! But **** all that shit man I'd just register that car out of state.

Take out all your EGR stuff, go catless midpipe and find an address or PO box that doesn't require emissions testing. This is the way.

That comes with risk as well for those that don't know. This state actually has a snitch website and phone number for your neighbors to report you.

How far the state will go coming after you I have no idea but I don't think it's worth the risk.

There are ways to play the game though here. Yes some of it involves some inconvenience but things can still be done.

I just had to go through this year my car is tuned so I removed the tune and had to unplug the battery for 4 hours so the KAM can be reset then I ran it for 80 miles until all the emissions systems were ready for smog and it passed fine.

Op, cobrabob is spot on.

He’s giving you very sound advice. Get with local cobra owner group, show them this thread, and set 5 hours to get it done.

Reg it, re install parts after, enjoy car.

I agree with everything except the bold text. I would just put it back to stock and to hell with reinstalling the parts. I wouldn't want to go through all this changing stuff every year. CA tries to make owning a modified car very difficult and no fun. To me it's just not worth the time and energy to go through all this rigama roll every 12 months.

That comes with risk as well for those that don't know. This state actually has a snitch website and phone number for your neighbors to report you.

This is another reason I would just make it stock and register it. Too many Karen's out there with nothing better to do than report out of state plates...

From what I remember, with my Dad and uncles, CA used to be an awesome place to own a badass car. Not anymore.....

So, I'll come visit, sign a few streets (LMAO), rev my loud exhaust and piss off the Karen's and then head back home to TEXAS!!!!
