Great thread..Thank you! Being very partial to Shelbys, I use to get my racing gas from Shelby Wheels back in the day for my 68 KR WW/GB color combo I'm greatly enjoying your salvation of this 500... To quote our POTUS.. So much win going on here!

I was in a similar situation. I already owned my car, but I got wrecked at the race track by a GTR. It was such a gut wrenching blow to see my car smashed in the front, and it wasnt even my fault. Repairs all out of pocket too; insurance wouldnt touch it and I didnt bother asking. Needed a new radiator core support, drivers fender, front bumper cover, hood and essentially the entire left front suspension. Id be happy to post pics if anyone's interested.

My journey took a few months, about 5K out of pocket but I got her back to 90%. In the coming months, Im going to have another body shop here in Phoenix try to get her back to 95-96%.

This car, and this project with your stepson will ALWAYS bring that much more value to this beautiful Shelby. Congrats and as a Shelby owner who has been in your shoes, thank you for saving her.

One thing to keep in mind, you may need a new spiral cable for the drivers air bag. Mine was melted when the bag deployed. Also, check the harness on the passenger dash airbag. As far as I remember, the SRS harnesses are all the same from the base to the Shelbys.
Wow man! What a story! Glad you are saving yours as well though. And something like that is what scares me a good bit from doing a track day, but the shelby I think will press the itch a bit further. And thanks for the air bag tip. I'll make sure to check those wires out when we tear into the bags.

Also thinking about some new wheels. The Shelby CS-3's have caught my eye. Never been a fan of the PP wheels, and it bothers me how narrow the whole setup is. I like these style wheels, and being available in gun metal gray, keeping an OE color setup on the car.

My two babies side by side. Got some work done on the shelby last night. Pulled both the passenger dash air bag and the steering wheel bag out. The drivers bag gets so hot when it gets set off, that it melts the connectors into them. I'll have to get a new clock spring to get fresh connectors. Got one of the air bags out of the seats as well. Now I need to figure out how the seat cover comes off the seat, so it can be sewn back together. Also got the one blown seat belt tensioner pulled out of her too, which should be in the mail today to get rebuilt.

Ill probably get some more work done tomorrow. Probably finish tearing down the seats at least.

If I attempted to do the work you are, the car would have been totaled twice
Its not that hard. These cars are pretty basic. Once you've had them apart once, you'll laugh at how mass production friendly they are.

I'm the guy that always has bolts left over after putting something back together
I always put the hardware back in where it came out, once I've removed it. Makes for forgetting what goes where a bit harder to do. Practice makes perfect man!

Picked up another 2500 in parts yesterday. 4 air bags, modules, lower splitter and crash pad, and all the decals. The goal was to get the seat covers pulled off the seats, and new air bags installed in the seats.

What do you guys think of the little work area I had? And I had to share the Optima GT battery, cause that's just cool!!!

Seat tear down was a bit of a bear. Hardest part was figuring out how the seat inserts come out. I couldn't find anything online about how they separate, and I left a message at recaro, but didn't hear back from them. I finally got lucky and got one corner of one separated and figured out the trick to doing it without breaking stuff.

First seat took nearly 1.5 hours to tear down. The second one took less than 15 mins. Its amazing how much faster things go when you know what you are doing!!

Seat covers are heading down to Kennebunk to a high end upholster guy this weekend. Hopefully have them back in the mail by the end of the week. Both seats have new air bags in them as well.

Pic of the two ladies again. The shebly has had an engine bay cleaning too. Needs a bit more of a touch up, but its worlds better.

Put the new hood on a stand and started to scuff the engine bay side, to get ready for paint. That took a few hours to get to where I wanted it. We will do some touch up on the bottom side where there is some flaws in primer sealer.

Had to get the passenger door ready for paint too. Pulled the mirror off, and then the inner door, to have access to the door handle hardware. Will have to work the heat gun for a bit to get the decal off also. Fender is back off, to get that ready to be sanded also.

I like those rims alot. You may want to look at the Rims I went with recently Vossen VFS6 series. They are same color and similar style and also 10.5" Rears. Fitment is perfect.

I have pics in the thread under this section called Show most recent pics of your 13/14".. its the grabber blue car on last page(23) of the thread.

Work progress is awesome and thanks for sharing.

Any advantage to the vossen wheels over the shelby's? I've had those same Vossen wheels on my list a few different times, but I've seen several cars with them on them, and was looking for something a little different. These cs wheels are new, so it's a good time I feel to grab something different.

Great looking wheel though. And I love the bit of a dish the rears have.

I don't really know of any advantage and I don't think you could go wrong with either, the Vossen rear definitely looks good with the concave or dish and gives it the muscle car look. The CS-3 is 11" though so you could go wider Tire I suppose. I have the Nitto NT05 305x30x20 on the Rear.

It's the opposite in my area, I've seen the CS-3 on a few Mustangs but no Vossen's, lol.

Good luck and either will look amazing and better than the stock PP Rims (plus clean much easier!)

@Silver Talon

What's the process for getting the seat covers back to usable after an airbag splits them? Can't tell from the pic but the leather looks okay, are they just resewing the seam.
