it's not like deer are an endangered species by any means.

Each state has it's own MANAGEMENT regulations that limits the amount of animals taken per season and also regulates the numbers that can be taken by sex to keep the numbers in check the way the need to be managed for a healthy herd. Hunting isn't there to just eradicate everything that moves.
