Is there some underlying punchline / reference with them I'm missing? I don't get it

For me, it's the facial expression of the characters contrasted with the text- some are silly, but others are hilarious. I guess maybe it's irony to some degree??

At first I thought lame too, but I began focusing on the expressions and my reaction shifted.

I mean c'mon, Bert meets his son Bort...funny.
