Well as you guys know I have a Mystic...and I removed my hood
blanket today and velcro'd back the plastic vent covers which are now fully open.

The Bad & Ugly:

Well I can now tell other Mystic owners that not only are the
bottom of your doors not painted but the center of your hood
is probably not painted also...mine is not painted much under the
blanket but that certainly doesn't effect performance. Further
your likely to find a couple pieces of tape under your hood
with manufacturing codes on them-You can't get them completely
off-Don't try you could make the hood worse.

Now-The Good:

The Blanket comes off real easy-Just remove all the plastic
tree pins & unscrew the insulator wire ground. Then un-clip
the latchs on the plastic vent covers and fold them back on the their hinges and secure to the hood with velcro-Tested & holds very well.

My hood underneath had only a few "very little minor scratchs" can't even notice as I cleaned the hood inside & Zaino'd it.

The sound is unbelievably better-Super Whine is much louder.

It was 80 degrees here today and the car runs MUCH cooler as
the temp gauge reads aprox 1/8 inch lower than mine usually
reads and you can see & feel the heat leaving the vents. The
car actually felt like it ran when it was cold outside.

The paint on the hood outside does NOT get very hot per feeling it after hard running & sitting. This is probably do to the material used in the hood and the vents extracting out so much heat. I believe it runs cooler than the regular hood mod as the blanket helps to hold in the heat. I'm very happy I did this simple mod as here in Reno it can reach 100 easy in the summer.

Overall:

I highly recommend removal of the blanket...looks under the
hood are nowhere as important as the gains you receive
of heat loss in the engine compartment. Further for those of
us with inside CAI Filters..You will notice the colder air in your
seat of your pants when the car is warmed up-It makes that
much of a difference when it is hot outside. One of the vents
sits right above the HE Coolant Bottle which I also think could
be a benefit. GO FOR IT-I'm glad I did!

I was considering this but I'm afraid there's no paint under the blanket and the verdict is still out on the paint peeling. I like the idea of the blower being a little louder!

I like the idea of removing the hood blanket but are there any issues with water running down on the motor and stuff? I would like to do this but I just want to make sure when I wash my car I don't get a bunch of soap running all over the belt and such. Thanks alot.

I've heard too many concerns about heat and paint issues after removing the blanket, so I'm not about to remove mine. I'd rather be safe than sorry. JOMO.

No Problem-When you wash the car simply un-do your velcro'd
covers putting a cloth or towel under the vents and close. No
water-No Issue. Probably would work also in the rain.

Even without doing this the water will flow in-between the
engine and the radiator if I now look down inside the vents.

Hmmmmmm

Any chance to get a detailled report on just what you did with the Velcro'd vents, etc. I'm thinking of going this route and want to be sure I don't mess up my Mystichrome...lol

Ya:

The plastic vent covers DO NOT have to be broken off.
The top side has easy remove latchs that you just press
and the top of the cover pops out & off. The bottom of the vent covers have hinges and can swing to rear upward to the hood.
I simply bought 10 round velcro (blue tabes) and fastened 5
on each side. I put the males on the back of the plastic vent
covers and the females on the hood. Push the vent covers on
their hinges back toward the hood and velcro fastens. Done.

With the premium you paid for the paint, I am suprised they didn't finish painting the hood. They are still leaving the tape on to?

 I enter my car in a # of car shows each summer and like to keep the eng. comp. as clean as i can. A little tip i use is i duct tape the vents form the top that way no water gets in the eng. comp. .Also keeps the hood blanket clean.

Actually he K&N is very close to the vents and I can tell
is getting colder fresher air probably do to the much improved
air circulation in the engine compartment. Sorry my computer
is old and I currently don't have digital pic capability.

Well said cobrabob. I took mine off for a while but ended up just doing the hod blanket mod(great free mod) and left the blanket on. I painted the cobra letters and the blanket black. I did'nt like how the hood looked when it was off because the fact that ford did'nt paint the middle section of the hood:shrug:. I think you'll still be ok with it off though. The lightning's don't have hood blanket'sat all I hear.

I did the hood blanket mod two weeks after I got the car. All I did was enlarge the holes and used air conditioner vent "alsuminum" tape. Matches, looks good, and I bent the flaps back and put the hood blanket back on. Looks great, even now, 17 months later.

If the blanket concerns you that much, I'd simply replace it or keep another in the garage for shows.

I'm in the same boat here. I'd love to do the hood blanket mod but it just rains so much here and the weather is often upredictable. I have a hard time keeping my windshield from fogging up because of all the heat generated under the hood and I'm sure the hood blanket mod would help out quite a bit.

Since when do our temp gauges display actual temperatures? It is my understanding that they are just glorified idiot lights.

Mine is ALWAYS pointing at 12 o-clock ....................Don
