Well as you guys know I have a Mystic...and I removed my hood
blanket today and velcro'd back the plastic vent covers which are now fully open.
The Bad & Ugly:
Well I can now tell other Mystic owners that not only are the
bottom of your doors not painted but the center of your hood
is probably not painted also...mine is not painted much under the
blanket but that certainly doesn't effect performance. Further
your likely to find a couple pieces of tape under your hood
with manufacturing codes on them-You can't get them completely
off-Don't try you could make the hood worse.
Now-The Good:
The Blanket comes off real easy-Just remove all the plastic
tree pins & unscrew the insulator wire ground. Then un-clip
the latchs on the plastic vent covers and fold them back on the their hinges and secure to the hood with velcro-Tested & holds very well.
My hood underneath had only a few "very little minor scratchs" can't even notice as I cleaned the hood inside & Zaino'd it.
The sound is unbelievably better-Super Whine is much louder.
It was 80 degrees here today and the car runs MUCH cooler as
the temp gauge reads aprox 1/8 inch lower than mine usually
reads and you can see & feel the heat leaving the vents. The
car actually felt like it ran when it was cold outside.
The paint on the hood outside does NOT get very hot per feeling it after hard running & sitting. This is probably do to the material used in the hood and the vents extracting out so much heat. I believe it runs cooler than the regular hood mod as the blanket helps to hold in the heat. I'm very happy I did this simple mod as here in Reno it can reach 100 easy in the summer.
Overall:
I highly recommend removal of the blanket...looks under the
hood are nowhere as important as the gains you receive
of heat loss in the engine compartment. Further for those of
us with inside CAI Filters..You will notice the colder air in your
seat of your pants when the car is warmed up-It makes that
much of a difference when it is hot outside. One of the vents
sits right above the HE Coolant Bottle which I also think could
be a benefit. GO FOR IT-I'm glad I did!
