I noticed this trend a couple years ago. It was very hard to find a retailer selling an O/R H/X pipe for any year Mustang 79-93, 94-98, 99-04, 05-09, 10-14, and 15+. I basically just looked through all the usual aftermarket Mustang sites, i.e., AM, LMR, Lethal, CJ-Pony-Parts, JPC, and many more sites.
When I had my 99 GT in 06', O/R mid-pipes were easy to find and just about every aftermarket performance company made one and I had a shorty MAC O/R H-pipe since I had LTs. Fast forward to 2012 and I had a 5.0, technically not until about 6 years later since I bought it off my father. I didn't really do anything to it since it already had a JLT CAI, SCT X3, Roush AB, and the other parts were gifts I bought for my father when he had it, like a Barton short throw shifter, Redline tuning struts, JPC over-axle pipes, and a tune for it I believe. Once I acquired it, I didn't really do anything to it and never looked into doing headers and a mid-pipe. I had to leave it in my parent's garage a year later since I bought a brand new WRX in 2013 to take to school with me since I needed a car that was good in the snow since Ohio winters can be harsh and something I could also have fun with year round. I quickly started modding it once the car hit 8k miles, but made sure not to go nuts so I couldn't keep it a true DD. Long story short, I bought a performance Perrin catted downpipe since I wanted something that flowed better and I wanted the cat to hold back pressure to hold boost since the car is turbocharged.
Anyways my Fox I recently bought in the past year has a BBK O/R H-pipe and that got me thinking about O/R H/X pipes again and when I started looking, I couldn't find one for sale. Every mid-pipe was catted and of course about $500+ compared to O/R mid-pipes that were under $150 the last time I was in the market for one.
The only O/R X-pipe I could find was a JBA shorty one for LTS for 11-14 GT500s. I'm sure if I look hard enough on other sites, I might be able to find one.
Sorry for the long rambling on. Is there a reason all the major aftermarket performance part sites only sell catted H/X pipes for pretty much all 79-21 Mustangs? My car has historic tags, doesn't have to go through inspection, and most importantly, doesn't ever need to pass emissions in my state.
Is there some new EPA law or something that is causing this to happen. I'm honestly just curious. I just don't want to pay $350-$400 more than what an O/R H/X pipe costs on my next Mustang.
