There's only one way to say it, Ford stole the show again. At the 2013 NAIAS Chevy introduced its new Silverado, then about 20 minutes later Ford essentially curb stomped the Bow Tie boys by rolling in the Atlas Concept Truck. The Atlas was pretty much the talk of the show last year. For 2014 Ford did it again, the 2015 Mustang and F-150 were easily the biggest draws at the show. At the opening of the Show journalists were instantly stacked deep to get some one-on-one time with both of the new Fords.
This show marked the largest gathering of new S-550 2015 Mustangs in one place. Ford rolled out several as-of-yet unseen color options including one I've affectionately taken to calling F'n Yellow, after overhearing a conversation between a few Ford employes concerning the Mustang's color palette. The 2015 Stang's interior is simply the finest ever fit to a Pony car, and the more time I spend with the car the more I'm convinced it is the best looking Mustang yet. Every inch of the car conveys the feelings of speed and power. I can't wait to get the opportunity to get some seat time in one on a road track. I already know the combination I'll be ordering.
However, the big introduction of the show was the all-new 2015 F-150. Ford has made massive changes to it's flagship truck, all designed to reduce weight and increase performance. For the first time ever the F-150 will be offered with a body built almost entirely of a high-strength aluminum alloy. The aluminum body, along with extensive use of high-strength/light-weight steel in the all-new frame, has lead to a truck that is up to 700 pounds lighter than the out going model while adding strength and capability. The construction of the aluminum body work includes many extruded pieces, and the panels (much like a Jaguar) are glued and riveted together. The 6.2L V8 seems to be missing from the engine lineup (along with the 3.7L V6), but a new 3.5L V6 and a 2.7L EcoBoost V6 will be available. The 2.7L can be considered a "2nd Generation" EcoBoost engine, and we'll have another article detailing some of it's features shortly. Also, the 5.0L Coyote has received several revisions including new cast exhaust 'headers' and charge-motion-control-valves. We'll be covering those features in the aforementioned article. Until then, check out the coverage of the Ford Display below:
