For stock removal, I leave in one front bolt, backed out halfway, and use a channel lock pliers upside down to grip the edge of shifter. (see photo on Joe Lynch's site) http://www.lx.net/jlynch/shifter.htm
But the Steeda shifter is almost flush with the transmission, so there is no place to grab to break the seal, so I used a rear drum brake adjusting tool. Looks like a bent screwdriver, and it can get in the crack. Then a twist should break the seal.
