Both of their celebrities were a lot smaller before they started dating bigger celebrities before quickly leaving them after their personal celebrity grew big.

J. Lo with Puffy, Berry with David Justice, etc. J. Lo in particular. Maybe Gold Digger isn't the best term, but they seemed to be dating some of their X's to benefit their careers more than anything. Hell I'm sure that was Mariah's motives when she married Thomas Mottola.
