I was looking over specs for various years of the Cobra Jet and it dawned on me that they never put the 5.8 in the CJ.

Year Motor Supercharger
2008 FE 5.4 2.3 tvs
2010 AL 5.4 2.3 tvs
2012 AL 5.4 2.3 tvs
2013 5.0 2.9 whipple

2013 would have been the year, but Ford opted to run the 5.0 instead of the 5.8. Anyone know the story behind this?

Im also curious to know the answer, but maybe its just as simple as the 5.0 is just a better drag motor since the power doesnt hit all at once and holds and revs higher?

Because of class rules NHRA, if they went with the 5.8L they would of been put into the super pro class and not the factory stock class. I think the CID limit was 305 CID for any FI/ Supercharged application engine in said class. I think you can have upwards of 427 CID for any NA built engine in class.

FP was also turning developmentally towards the Coyote platform.
I was at the NMCA Norwalk CJ reunion and there was one orange 5.8 CJ, but not sure how it was made.
I’ll try and post pics later.

Maybe it was N/A? This was an option in 2013.

This is probably the main reason

I think Bimini is correct. Everything in 2013 pointed toward the Coyote 5.0 being the way forward for Ford Performance. The GT350 got a modified Coyote 5.2 FPC, the 2020 GT500 Predator is Coyote based 5.2 CPC.

Its as incredible a package for performance as the 4.6 DOHC Modulars proved to be when guys like John Mihovetz got their hands on them. With a proper S/C or turbo cam profile, they are right there with the GT500 5.4's and 5.8's and are only 302 ci. Rev to the moon and produce monstrous power when built... Ford hit a damn homerun with the Coyote.

That said Ill stick to my dinosaur of an all aluminum 5.4. :D

This would not explain why the AL 5.4 in '10 and '12 and the iron block in '08.

I also have to imagine it was due to the Corp push behind Coyote development.
