Long story short- Dad's a VP of a local Ford dealerships Parts Dept/Operations- Just not sales. Been there 35 years now.

I wanted a new F150 5.0 truck. Didn't want to play games. Just wanted to drive/check them out with zero pressure. Sales manager (who I don't know) brought me three sets of keys. Talked to me about his experience and what he usually sells, what he'd buy, and what was good for the money or a waste.

Then he put me with a real easy going sales guy who basically drove them around to me to try out. Then I said lets talk numbers, but I will give you my Credit Score as I don't want it pulled until we know what I want.

In the end, I drove about 4 trucks, left around lunch, came back around 8, bought what I wanted, and was gone in 30 minutes. It was an easy going affair. All because the Sales Manager wasn't a creep, sales person was easy going, and they let me make my own decision on my time.

I had a saleswoman that texted and called me every day for a month to buy a car I test drove. The car had damage on it and I passed on it. One of her messages was something like: "I really need this sale. Buy the car now. I know you have the money." lol

I have a better relation with my Ford dealer because I know the owner of the Ford dealer and deal with him direct and his son handles the sales. The dealer allows test drives on GT350s and Raptors and they don't mark up anything, in fact they go under MSRP. Really good experience and they hold track days for GT350 and ST/RS owners.

Went to a used car lot 2 weeks ago to look at a used 2018 Toyota for use in my business. 25000km, as new condition etc, advertised price $28k CDN. New MSRP on this car is $29500 so I figured they would deal on the price. I looked the car over, went on a 10 minute test drive and then put a certified check on the desk for $26k + tax and they wouldn't take it crying it was below their cost and they wouldn't even budge on the asking price since the car was only on the lot a couple days. I picked up my check and left. I'm not sure what they are smoking thinking they will sell a used car for $1k less than it sold for new...lol! I'll call back in a month and I'm sure their tune will have changed! :D

The dealership I worked for years ago had a rep for giving good numbers on trade in...but they gave waaay too much on trades especially on trucks...they had a helluva time moving those trucks because they were into them for silly money...that sales manager went away after the store was bought by a very group. The used prices were totally out of control there and people were going elsewhere. The new owner ironically was getting a lot of that buisness. Once he took over the used prices reflected the market and now they are killin it

thier service dept still sucks though lol

traditional car salesmen is such an obsolete profession now. 95% of the people who are buying cars already know exactly what they want when they go to a lot. You can find everything you need to know with 1 or 2 clicks on the internet. Some of the times you know more than the actual "pro" themselves. The first car brand that switches to a more modern form of car buying from dealerships will have my business

Disagree. 95% of people buy cars when someone puts them in a seat and makes a sale. A Salesman does that. If they don't run into a Salesman they just kind of wander around looking at stuff.

As far as what o p is talking about , most salesmen are not given access to those numbers. They have a good idea, and they can find them the same as you could I guess. But they're not allowed to generally give them out. It has to go through a sales manager.

Fwiw, car sales are just these guys full of more energy than brains. They think they're smarter than everyone and they're going to trick people into a deal, but they're not even the people you have to worry about. They will sell a car for nothing and not care. The people you have to worry about are the finance department. 90% of the people that have been screwed on cars have been screwed by the finance department and don't even realize it

I found a car I wanted to buy in GA.. I was ready to buy, and talked on the phone and email.. I told them here is the price.. and it was fair.. They told me they do not negotiate unless it's in person. I explained I was in another state.. They flat our refused to sell a call unless I came into the dealer..

Give me a shot next time on a Ford and I'll show you how easy it should be. You wouldn't be my first sale to a Colorado resident.

I haven't yet, but buddy who flew out for the dually, was happy with you. I'm sure you noticed, his tolerance for bullshit is at a zero if not in the negatives, lol. Liked dealing with you though.

This is why Vroom, Carmax, and Carvana are doing so well. Price is what it is, no haggle (for the most part) easy transaction via email and web, and done.

That said, i do enjoy the in person sales experience. Ive literally bought close to 30 new cars in person (maybe more) and always enjoy the experience. Sure some sales folks are bufoons, but so are many car buyers.

I always get advice from people in the know (thanks Nick) prior to a buy, then get most of the deal secured online. On my 2018 i came to what i figured was a fair price (dealer has to make some money guys!) then drove down, signed papers, and drove away.

@13COBRA Im hoping that the new Bronco is a worthy competitor to the Wrangler Rubicon. If it is, and my lady likes it, we will be giving you a call for some numbers. Still deciding if my lady wants to pay off and keep her Outlander Sport too or trade it.

Here's hoping Ford doesnt drop the ball on the Bronco, lmao!

Last dealer i worked for wouldnt sell you a car unless you paid for nitrogen. it was $299.
I was an F&I manager for 7 years at a dealership. We charged for nitrogen, and didnt even have it or use it. F&i guys make insane salaries. 80k to 120ish. They make the dealship loads of money.

Having worked at a dealership, i will never, ever take a car there for service. I know all the tricks, all the scams.
