And people wonder why road rage is a thing. There are actually idiots that don't understand that when you're in the left lane, it doesn't matter how fast you're going, if someone comes up behind you going faster, you GET THE **** OVER!
Not even remotely what you initially typed.
https://jalopnik.com/5501615/left-lane-passing-laws-a-state-by-state-map Take the link with a grain of salt. But it explains it for you, also note where your state falls in the categories. Explains a few things.
Tickets 100% deter people from doing what they want...quite literally, there's no question about it.
If there were no fear of getting a ticket, every single person in here would be going to Mexico for their entire commute.
...
With that said, police only need to make a visible presence to deter traffic violations as opposed to hiding behind hills, signs, or other structures in an attempt to catch those who are in violation. ...
I was just thinking the other day that, if I was a politician, I'd try to outlaw traffic cops skulking around behind billboards and trees trying to catch speeders. I'd make it so they'd have to be actually patrolling the roads in plain site and moving with traffic. I've never once seen a cop pull over a tailgater, lane hog, or snail driver. The only traffic violations they go after are speeders.
Wouldn’t marked patrol cars in moving traffic just make the motorists around the cops drive how they should for that short period. Once the cop is out of sight everyone would drive like they’re in Mexico, especially if you know they would never hide. Would people drive more cautiously if cops were in unmarked cars? You wouldn’t know if one was around you.

I'm really trying to figure out how yall are giving @Ohio Snake grief about what he said. He's 100% right in what he's saying. If there are three cars in the middle lane going 65 and he goes into the left lane to pass the three cars he should only move back into the middle lane after passing the third slower moving car. If a faster driver happens to come up behind him while he's passes slower moving traffic they will have to wait til he can safely move to the middle lane, squeezing between two slow moving vehicles isn't safe, period.
HA come to Illinois, it's insane, the crappy roads, the nut cases, the traffic. Hell I telecommute 80% of the time and when I drive in early morning traffic I dread it because people are ****ing retarded. I some times wonder how half the people here have jobs let alone make it to work on a daily basisOhio does have shitty roads.

Well in Ohio you have to have clearly marked cars be able to read and see the departments name 50 feet away in order to enforce traffic laws in the state. So unmarked is a no go for this state and also Georgia has a similar law.
I think the heartburn is that Ohio Snake feels that, if a faster car comes up behind him while he's passing, he doesn't have to speed up his passing maneuver to get out of the faster driver's way. I don't think anybody was suggesting that he dip back in between slower moving cars so the other guy can get by. As far as his heartburn with being tailgated while there are cars in front of him, that is the unwritten rule of the road. People bunch up close behind the jughead holding up traffic in hopes that they'll look in the rear view and see the road train their pulling and get the hell out of the way. If everybody keeps a "comfortable" following distance, the lane hog would remain oblivious to the fact that people want to get by. Now, if Ohio Snake is leaving 10 car lengths between him and the cars in front of him that are also passing, that's another story.

It’s crickets because you’re in the wrong. People like you are why I-35 between SA and Austin is so ****ed up. You think that the speed limit you give yourself is “fast enough” and damn the ones going faster. Not only are you an inattentive driver but also a shitty one if you can’t seamlessly slide in between 2 cars (with 2 or 3 car lengths between them) going 65 from 75.You are partly correct. If I’m passing but doing slower than traffic moving up on me in the fast lane, I will speed up to a comfortable speed (may be 80mph in Ohio temporarily) move back over to the middle lane ASAP.
If people are in front of me while passing, there is not much you can do and I don’t tailgate those in front of me
What really got to me was I made a very generalized statement about a person tailgating me well above the limit without giving any additional details. The thread was not about my lane passing etiquette or the me knowing the laws each state has for passing a motorist.
Unfortunately, assumptions were made that if I was being tailgated, I must be doing something wrong or I must have jumped out in front of someone to enforce traffic speed. The crazy assumptions then led to what I should and should not do when passing. When I detailed the entire incident.....it went crickets.
I’ve been driving long enough , I am sure I can get through any state ( with or without left lane passing laws) without incident or being an instigator. BTW, people don’t tailgate when Im driving RV up a long climb when passing a truck ( if permitted). I guess the size is intimidating

The State feels making the cars visible as opposed to unmarked is deterrent for speeders. interestingly, I believe Ohio is the ticket issuing happiest state in the Union. I think Ohio issues more tickets than California and Fl. No wonder the troopers have the newest cars.
