Do tickets deter bad driving?

I’m on the road every day and see a lot of horrible driving. I know this is nothing new to anyone, but it got me wondering about how we all got to this point. Do traffic tickets deter bad driving? If not, what’s the solution? I know Georgia has a super speeder fine that is about a house payment if you go 15 or so more over a speed limit. That would deter me from speeding.

Super speeder is a $200 fine from the state on top of whatever ticket you got. Super speeder is 85+ on any highway and 75+ on any two-lane road.

I want to be a traffic cop a few days a month to ticket all the stupid I see on the roads.

I would volunteer to be a DNR officer if I could keep half the revenue from all the stupid boater tickets I could write.

Three types of stupid people who need to be ticketed more often:
1.) Those that text and drive.
2.) Those that clearly run through red lights when they should be stopping. I guess yellow must mean floor it to them.
3.) Those that come into your lane ( head-on) to get around a bicyclist ( or other object) in their lane while you are passing forcing you to veer off the road.

They used to, but not anymore. People just don't care about paying a fine or getting points. They game the system to get around losing their license whether lying to the judge or the MVA about needing their license or why they were speeding or whatever offense they were ticketed for. Don't care about how much their insurance is, somebody will give them insurance. And really don't care about anyone else on the road as long as they get where they want to get as fast as possible.

No.

They just pay the ticket and keep on moving.

I've been saying it for years. There should be a 'You're an idiot' ticket, that is something astronomical like $10,000, and mandatory 1-2 year license revoke.

I see STUPID shit daily : ie people going 40mph on the interstate, making turns down 1 way streets or going in exit only lanes, texting while on the phone (now illegal in GA to have phone in your hand while driving), people sitting at green lights cuz they're scrolling through ****ing facebook, hogging left lane, etc.

Money is easy to obtain or at least a lot easier than trying to get a license from the government provided it was taken away from you. A monetary ticket doesn't do much unless it is obscenely priced and even then any lesson learned is temporary. Take away a license and then jail someone driving w/o one and that will do it.

Im guilty of speeding every day, but like 5 over or at least the flow of traffic. Last ticket was about 2 years ago. .... high speed lane splitting on my Liter Bike in CA...lmao

Theres a reason why the liter bike is gone for now. I want another one in the future (track), and Id love a hardtail bobber to mess around with. But I know I don't want another ticket... and I know I cant resist on a bike.

Believe it or not, I try and drive my Shelby easy on the street. Last thing I need is a ticket in it. Im no saint, but seeing the morons drive here in Phoenix, I deserve a ****ing letter of commendation from the Governor.

This one here makes my blood boil, especially when they finally realize they're holding up traffic and take off barely making it and I get stuck waiting for the next light.

Actually had a traffic safety class tell me to do that for number 2. Said there are more accidents caused by people slamming on the brakes for a yellow then to speed up and get through the intersection.

This is why I just put it on cruise @ 79 and I'll get there when I get there. NC has some thing like that as well, I think anything over 80mph is a mandatory court appearance. They got my cousin for 94 in a 70 about a 1/2 mile from his exit.

Tickets 100% deter people from doing what they want...quite literally, there's no question about it.

If there were no fear of getting a ticket, every single person in here would be going to Mexico for their entire commute.

I think they make it so not EVERYONE goes 100mph all day but thats about it. They deter extreme speeding. People don't give two shits about cutting people off, obstructing the flow of traffic, texting while driving, running lights etc...

Oh are you spot on here! Absolutely my top 3 driver peeves.

I had an incident not in that list of three on Wednesday. I was on a 2-lane road with a speed limit of 45. There was a small station wagon in front of me doing just under 40. A Subaru wagon behind me (not tailgating me in any way) as behind me. I know the route and knew there was a passing zone coming up. As soon as we hit the zone, I put my signal on to pass and started my pass. I noticed movement rear left and this freaking idiot in back of me decided to drive to pass me AND the car in front of me. But I was far enough into my pass so he had to brake. Had I not seen him at the moment I did, things would have been BAD. The idiot was so embarrassed by his try to pass both vehicles that he dropped down below 30 mph and just fell way behind.

To add to the list, my #1 would be tailgaters. I am all for someone tailgating me if I'm the one holding up traffic. But, if we're in a line of cars on a single lane road, get off my bumper!

You ever watch "Bill Burr's Guide to Driving Etiquette"? The short videos are well worth the watch (I think I remember you being a Burr fan)!

Absolutely! I LOVE Bill Burr. Tanya bought me tickets to see him in NYC last year for my birthday. Loved every second of it. He's twice as good live.

Depends on the circumstances. Speeding tickets are tax bonuses for towns that don't know how to spend their money effectively.

Traffic turbulence causes the most accidents.
That idiot going 25 in a 45?
That moron swerving around because they're texting?
The tailgater that causes the slinky effect when they jack on the brakes?
The moron that runs down the break-down lane instead of zippering?
Yep, those are the jackasses that should be fined or have their licenses revoked.

Going 85 on the highway with a group of 20 other people? Very little turbulence. Come across some idiot in the left lane going 50? They're the problem, not the consistent flow of traffic.
