I've put myself through school since I started (dad "got invited not to come back to college" and mom never went) so they said I'd try harder and appreciate it more if I paid for it myself which is true, and I appreciate them making me find my own way. It's been a slower road than a lot of people I know and I've been broke since I moved out, but to date i have zero student loan debt and I have great grades... Only downside is I can't do what I want without my degree so in the mean time i have worked 3 years in retail and 2 in insurance... Not at all what I pictured myself doing.

Your parents did right. Paying for kids college is foolish and not an obligation like society says it is.

I LOVE MY "JOB"!!! Something i'm great at which allows me to travel a lot. Get to see the world while making money and meeting people (some in high places). I don't have to answer to anyone but myself and i can take a vacation or a sick day at the drop of a hat (rarely ever do i do that). I continue to learn new things by providing challenges and hurdles daily. It's a test every week to see what i'm capable of. On top of all that fun stuff, it also allows me to pursue other ventures. How can i complain?!?!??!

sorry if i rained on someone's vent parade with my positivity. haha

Btw before someone asks....i'm in the export industry..oooooooohhhhhh

If you're coming out of college debt free then you're already ahead of the game. Keep at it.

I. HATE. MY. JOB.

Most of you guys/gals probably know, but I'm an I.T. Specialist for a chain of family-owned General Motors dealerships. We support five dealerships across two different cities.

The people are, for the most part, good to work with. HOWEVER, some of the management make my life a living hell with some of the stupid crap they do. Namely my own manager who, as a Director of Technical Operations, should know how to set up a damn router in bridge mode. (sorry...currently handling that little project right now for him and a bit pissed I'm not getting other crap done).

The pay here is God-awful. Seriously, I'd be shocked to shit if I wasn't the lowest paid member of SVTP. There's ZERO benefits, ZERO opportunity to advance, I'm on call 24/7 as an HOURLY employee and I am not paid for the support calls I am required to take in my off time. Yup, if there's an issue Tuesday night at 10:00pm, I have to take the call at home, solve the issue, and never see a single dime for it. My. Job. Is. Shit.

Overworked, underpaid, unappreciated, and constantly stressed. I need a job change before I implode. :fm::cuss::mj::cuss:

31 years of tough love. The last couple have been challenging because all the surgeries. It is hard to keep up with the young guys now. Retirement is just around the corner.

I'm an operating engineer at a data center. I like the job itself for the most part, and the data center world is very cool stuff. I just hate the location with a passion, and everyone in it.

I hate it. I work in the tech department for a MAJOR performance parts company. Imagine talking to people who can't read, refuse to read, refuse to understand, cannot turn a wrench, cannot solve problems, will argue with everything you instruct them to do, and also Canadians.

Main chunk of it is logistics, freight forwarding. Now i'm pretty deep into buying used construction/heavy equipment here in the states and selling them to by clients overseas. Then i also get to make profit on transporting it to them where ever in the world they are. Been doing this with Autos for years. Also, own condos that are on rent and land in various locations in the world. My wife's income along with rental property gets stored for rainy days and future kids.

Its not raining on a vent parade, its inspiring to hear of people doing what they love and making a good living doing it.

i agree, it's motivating to see others succeed, but not everyone thinks the same way.

Sounds awful, make the change. it's tough and you will be tight on cash for a few months, but it's worth making a change specially as you mentioned there is no room for growth.

Unfortunately, wish i had something to offer, but my IT guys are 2 of my great friends who go above and beyond and i agreed for them to do their own hiring. They hired their friends lol. I can't let em go, but if i hear someone looking for IT i'll shoot you a PM.

I remember one of my friends, who works IT for an oil inspection company in pasadena, was looking for a new IT guy. Problem is the pay really isn't good ($35,000) and the environment is probably similar to where you are at now.

Sounds like you need to file a grievance on your employer with the Department of Labor.

I'm a computer engineer that does software and system design.

I'm too lucky; I can't imagine doing anything else, I'd do what I do even if I wasn't paid.

I honestly love my job. I work in Loss Prevention for a big box retailer, and no two days are the same. I've done office jobs where it's the same thing Monday-Friday and get burnt out of it after a year or two. Here, I get to make my own schedule, the pay is decent with good opportunitity to move even further to a store or district manager, as long as I get my stops (whether internal or external). Get to play with 350+ cameras and should soon have a remodel that includes some PTZ cameras.
The only downside, is the people who want to fight over what to amounts to $200 worth of stuff.
We did have an assistant manager get his bell rung pretty good trying to go alone in making a stop, and accusing the customer instead of just trying to talk them back into the store.

As an accounting manager, several friends have given me crap for having a "boring job". I dissent. Numbers don't bullshit.

Thanks man. Always nice to work with friend, and I don't blame you for that one bit. I have been kicking around the idea of just starting my own I.T. business. I can do a lot of things myself, and if it takes off, I can hire on some help. I know a few very good techs who have already told me they'd work for me if things turned out that way.

Just tired of wasting away here dealing with this stuff. Probably why some of my posts on here are so abrasive at times....it's my out. :D

Not healthy, and life is too short to continue with it.

Yeah...if the DoL heard even half the crap that goes on here, we'd probably be shut down. It's bad. But it's what you get with a family owned business in Texas, or at least in my experience. I'm sure there are some good owners out there too.

Here, I.T. "is not a revenue-generating department", so we aren't seen as necessary....until something breaks. :rollseyes

I work with the public and hate every moment of it. I know better things are ahead though, so I keep working.

start small, start building a list of clients and do side jobs. You will be busy as hell juggling both but it'll be worth it. if there is something you can't cover because of your day job, ask one of your contacts to cover for you and split the profit down the middle. 50% of something is better then 100% of nothing. One day you will be in a position where the side jobs are paying more then the GM dealerships and you can say "dueces" and walk out hahaha.

My IT guys do side work while they work for me. I know most people won't allow it, but idc as long as someone is around if something goes down and my company is covered when needed, idc what they do. Figured they are just trying to better themselves, can't be mad at that.
