Ford Dealers Don't Trust Ford

Story by Lawrence Hodge • 21h

Automotive News reports that a dealer survey conducted by automotive data firm Kerrigan Advisors shows that Ford dealers have very little trust in company that makes the brand they sell. Meanwhile Toyota dealers have the most trust in their brand.

From June to October 2023, 650 dealers across the country were anonymously surveyed in the fifth edition of Kerrigan’s annual dealer survey. The trust question made its debut this year, something Erin Kerrigan, the firm’s managing director told Auto News came about after the recent EV push. Ford came up as the least trusted brand according to its dealerships.

Forty-eight percent of dealers said they have no trust in Ford and Kerrigan Advisors found that outcome “consistent with the expectation of a decline in future Ford franchise profitability due to the OEM’s EV/future retailing strategy.”
Kerrigan Advisors thinks that the negative sentiment regarding Ford revealed in the findings could impact the franchise’s future blue sky values, which is the value of a dealership including goodwill.

Ford issued a statement to Automotive News responding to the survey, saying that its dealers are “important strategic partners and we are always listening and making adjustments. Working with our dealers, we have made recent beneficial changes to address dealer feedback and improve franchise value.” Nissan, Lincoln, Stellantis and Infiniti rounded out the top five that dealers trust the least after Ford.

Toyota’s dealers trust the brand the most, something Kerrigan says has to do with the brands strategy.

Dealers “trust that Toyota is not only going to do the right thing by producing the right vehicles for the consumer today, but it also will ensure that as the drivetrain changes and as the consumer’s way of interacting with the dealer changes, they’re going to continue to make this a win-win relationship for the OEM and the dealer,” Kerrigan said.
Kerrigan said things like “discontent ignited by EV strategies and too many EVs flooding dealership lots” and concerns about profitability related to over the air updates are driving the mistrust and skepticism for brands like Ford.

Ford cuts planned 2024 production of electric F-150 Lightning in half

The new production plans call for average volume of around 1,600 F-150 Lightnings a week at Ford’s Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn, Michigan, starting in January, according to a source familiar with the decision. The automaker most recently planned to produce roughly 3,200 of the vehicles on average per week.

The up and coming cars have TOO MUCH tech in them. Since when do I need a car to adjust interior temps like a house? Why do I need a car with stuck on iPads as dash readouts? Why does every single module have to be tied into the dash iPad and the dash is absent of any physical button/knob?

How is not paying attention to the road acceptable now when everyone has to take their eyes off it to fanagle their damn dash iPads just to make what used to be simple adjustments?

Too many lazy people anymore. No one wants to manually adjust anything and wants the damn car to do everything plus drive itself too….

This will be the up and coming society - the movie had it right:

Tesla recalls nearly all vehicles sold in US to fix system that monitors drivers using Autopilot

DETROIT — Tesla is recalling nearly all of the vehicles it sold in the U.S., more than 2 million across its model lineup, to fix a defective system that’s supposed to ensure drivers are paying attention when they use Autopilot.

Documents posted Wednesday by U.S. safety regulators say the company will send out a software update to fix the problems.

The recall comes after a two-year investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration into a series of crashes that happened while the Autopilot partially automated driving system was in use. Some were deadly.
The agency says its investigation found Autopilot's method of ensuring that drivers are paying attention can be inadequate and can lead to foreseeable misuse of the system.

The recall covers models Y, S, 3 and X produced between Oct. 5, 2012, and Dec. 7 of this year.

The software update includes additional controls and alerts “to further encourage the driver to adhere to their continuous driving responsibility,” the documents said.
The update was to be sent to certain affected vehicles on Tuesday, with the rest getting it at a later date, the documents said.

Autopilot includes features called Autosteer and Traffic Aware Cruise Control, with Autosteer intended for use on limited access freeways when it’s not operating with a more sophisticated feature called Autosteer on City Streets.

The software update apparently will limit where Autosteer can be used.
“If the driver attempts to engage Autosteer when conditions are not met for engagement, the feature will alert the driver it is unavailable through visual and audible alerts, and Autosteer will not engage,” the recall documents said.

Depending on a Tesla’s hardware, the added controls include “increasing prominence” of visual alerts, simplifying how Autosteer is turned on and off, additional checks on whether Autosteer is being used outside of controlled access roads and when approaching traffic control devices, “and eventual suspension from Autosteer use if the driver repeatedly fails to demonstrate continuous and sustained driving responsibility,” the documents say.

Recall documents say that agency investigators met with Tesla starting in October to explain “tentative conclusions” about the fixing the monitoring system. Tesla, it said, did not concur with the agency's analysis but agreed to the recall on Dec. 5 in an effort to resolve the investigation.

Tesla's recall should help to address the crash issues due to drivers not maintaining road awareness, but.....I personally would NOT trust an autopilot feature. I'm thinking about the recent autopilot commercial where the driver and occupants were enjoying a bit of in-car entertainment while the driver disengaged from the steering wheel, allowing the vehicle to pilot itself. Nice way to encourage a disregard for awareness. Nope. I want my hands on the steering wheel and my eyes on the road. I don't care HOW good the manufacturer claims the feature is. And then there are the nut cases out there who drive about as recklessly as they can, with utter disregard to other drivers. I don't trust AI to account for every one of them. Nope!

Bentley will stop production of the W-12 engine at its factory in Crewe, U.K., in April 2024, marking the end of the line for the VW Group's unconventional 12-cylinder powertrain that was introduced more than 20 years ago. Once the W-12 departs the production line, Bentley says it will be replaced with V-8 and V-6 hybrid production as the company continues to transition its lineup towards hybrids and EVs.

Essentially made up of two VR6 engines, the W-12 has been around since the early 2000s in various forms. Besides the wide range of Bentley models in which it's available, including the Continental GT, the Flying Spur, and the Bentayga, it was previously offered in other VW Group vehicles such as the Audi A8 and Volkswagen Phaeton.

Ford CEO calls UAW standoff a 'watershed' moment

Ford Motor (NYSE:F) CEO Jim Farley weighed in on the automaker's labor challenges during an appearance at the Wolfe Research Global Auto Conference on Thursday. Farley said the Detroit auto giant will think carefully about where it builds new vehicles following the standoff with the United Auto Workers union during the fall.
Farley noted the transition from internal combustion to electric vehicles means Ford (F) will have to be strategic with its manufacturing decisions. He highlighted that Ford has kept is pickup truck production in the U.S. even as some competitors built plants in Mexico. Farley said Ford thought it was the right kind of cost to take on to maintain a good relationship with the UAW, although the company ended up paying a price and may alter future decisions.
"Our reliance on the UAW turned out to be we were the first truck plant to be shut down... Really our relationship has changed. It's been a watershed moment for the company. Does this have business impact? Yes."
High manufacturing costs are one of main reasons why Ford (F) has a $7B annual cost disadvantage to competitors, according to Farley. Ford (F) is working on lower some key expenses, and aims to offset the higher costs tied to the new UAW contract. Looking ahead, Ford (F) expects to take out $2B worth of costs this year.
Sector watch: Recent developments in the electric vehicle sector indicate that Mexico is in a powerful position to broker a 'Westernized' China-based EV supply chain, according to Morgan Stanley. "Given the ambiguities and loopholes embedded in the IRA as it is currently written, EVs produced in Mexico with the help of Chinese equipment and industrial know-how offer a potentially viable, if somewhat uncomfortable, path to on-shoring low cost EVs," observed analyst Adam Jonas. The race to Mexico appears to have already started with several reports of Chinese auto industry suppliers setting up plants in Mexico to supply Tesla's (TSLA) upcoming gigafactory in the region and with BYD Company (OTCPK:BYDDF) notably looking to set up shop in Mexico as well.
