I'm curious what the advantage is of eliminating the digital starter and ignition system is in favor of a MSD distributor? Seems like there would be less control of the spark and timing with this type of setup than with a digital ECU and tune. Somebody please educate me:read:

Yep, spark energy needed is not doable with a coil on plug. Thats a REALLY big magneto as far as magnetos go.

The stand alone is map based, and it can still control spark curves like stock. It's boost vs rpm where stock is load vs rpm. After market is more accurate though because it has more cells to work with.

So they're still running a digital stand alone ECU, just controlling the spark with a more robust, albeit older tech, solution?

Exactly. ECU will still control the timing. Not quite like the older carbed cars where the timing is set to go up and down mechanically and that's it.
