I wonder what he did to get a 72 into the low 12s. He is beating the ass of cars with way more power at least on paper.

More compression and a custom cam mostly. The cam has to be stock lift and duration at 0.050 but states nothing about ramp rates among other things

Love that L88 Vette. My cousin in CA used to own one in red back in '69. That car was such a monster.

Are you familiar with this car?
That particular car, no. However, it's pretty common and perfectly acceptable since the rules allow it. I'm not infering that the owner is cheating, just that the engine isn't as it left the factory for that setup.

The W-30 cam specs at (0.006) 328/328 .475/475 on a 108 overlap for the 4 speed cars, the auto cars got a 286/287 .472/.472 cam with 57 overlap.

The GS-X got (0.006) 316/340 .490/.490 on a 91 degree overlap.

You can tell right away that an auto W-30 doesn't stand a chance against a GS-X car based on cam alone. The car above most likely uses the 4 speed cam which requires a factory special QJunk carb. In top of that, it's probably running more compression. That car isn't typically what a W-30 car usually runs.

This is what a typical W-30 should be running

Just wanted to add that the W-30 should need well over 400hp to run a low 12 in the 1/4. The 4 speed cam gets you pretty close. Add in some tweaks allowed by rules and I can see a highly optimized W-30 car running that time.

I've seen a few dynos of built to stock 455s and they seem to fall in around 380-390hp when fully stock down to the air cleaner and iron manifolds. They were purposely and grossly underrated from the factory.

I like the BOP engines, they get unfairly overshadowed by Chevy for some dumbass reason. The 455s imo were better than the boat anchor 454s.

I agree with you on all counts. I have both a 70 W30 and a 70 stg1 Buick. The Olds is stock from top to bottom and dynode at 375hp given a correction for drive train loss. The GS is far from stock and ran 11:40s last time we had it out. They are great cars and were better than the Chevy at that time era for sure.
I would love to go to one of these F.A.S.T events sometime, really cool cars.

They used to have an annual F.A.S.T. weekend up at Lebanon Valley Dragway. Those were fun events! Always fun watching the older iron motor down the track. Brings back a lot of fond memories from the late '60s and early '70s.

Here's a fun video of early muscle (Musclepalooza event) at Lebanon Valley. Skip to 1:51.

Car in your vid is a 70. '72 is down another 70 HP.
