my wife got a new mercedes that she uses as a company vehicle for which her job compensates her $350 in gas a month. becuz its a mercedes the maintenance is higher on it and german engineering is whack (no dipsticks oil or trans, all sensors) im forced to take it to the dealer which is getting expensive. im thinking she is getting the short end of the stick. she averages 3500 miles a month (1000 personal im guessing) at 20mpg the $350 gets her 2400 miles roughly and breaking about even. she claims her mileage at the end of year but i feel she is still getting cheated. what is normal compensation for a personal company car? should she also be getting paid for wear and tear or a car allowance? thanks in advance

Depends on the company. Would they have given her a car if she didn't get the Mercedes? I say she should be happy she's getting anything.

we have a vw jetta and I can't work on hardly anything. If maintenance is becoming more and more of an occurrance, I'd be looking for an american made 4cyl car with those kind of miles she's putting on it. Labor or parts aren't cheap on these things.

Damn even uncle sam pays $.50 per mile when you have to use your own vehicle for TDY/PCS etc.

it didnt matter what car she chose to buy, they would have given her the same gas allowance

i dunno bout you guys, but in CA its now $0.50/mi that the company MUST at least pay. Used to be $0.55/mi.

If you get 25mpg and gas costs $3.50/gal (or $0.14/mi), and you're getting $12.50/gal (or $0.50/mi) to cover it..........Id say the difference more than makes up for wear and tear. Of course if youre smart and pick a vehicle that can handle such abuse with minimal wear/tear........you bank the rest.

Of course, if shes doing that much traveling, might be wise to invest in a suitable vehicle.

I lol'd when my GF used to do sales and the company gave here a Cheep Liberty to do 3-4hrs a day of driving in. They arent too smart........ Wasnt too bad tho, they paid ALL her mileage in it, work and personal. Was like having a free 3rd vehicle for a while.

what is tdy/pcs?

Think TDY is "Temporary Duty Yonder" and PCS is "Permanent Change of Station"........

Too much NCIS for this guy.

sounds like she shouldve gotten a cheaper vehicle

"average" vehicles wouldnt have the same maintenance costs

if you wouldve got a Focus, Fusion, hell even a Taurus...your maintenance bills would be less

I have a similiar setup with my company. They use a company called Runzheimer to manage the expenses. I get $467 a month plus mileage. The mileage varies monthly based on oil prices. My total reimbursement is around $1000 a month. This is with driving around 2500 work miles per month. I am responsible for insurance, maintenance, car payment, etc...

fyi, I work in sales for a Fortune 100 company.

The company cant be expected to cover your wife's desire to have an expensive car. I am willing to bet they pay that amount regardless of the car the employee drives. Get rid of it and get a Ford Fiesta or Focus.

Mine is similar to grendel. $1100/Month for vehicle + insurance. I expense car washes, maintenance and the gas.

I'm not sure what she sells, but I've never heard of a set dollar amount that's supposed to cover the bulk mileage for the month.

I'd say that company comes out well. That $.50 a mile, for example, is comprised of fuel, depreciation and maintenance reimbursement. If she's driving more than 700 Miles a month for work - that's not right. The type of car doesn't matter.

It does not matter what she drives ,you need to check into your states laws , I have always been paid at least .35 cent a mile whan using my personal vehicle .Plus most insurance companies want to know you use it for work so thay can cover you accordingly ( i.e. charge you more ).

This. You will come out a lot better if you drive something fairly cheap to maintain that gets good mileage.

Sales 101, don't show personal luxury to your customers. Kinda shows them how bad they are getting screwed over.

I asked one of my customers wives the same thing. She's a Realtor. Their theory is to show it. Success shoes you can sell their crap for them and are good at it. Sales may be different though. Maybe get a 94 Escort and beg for sales lol
