Driving to the store tonight around 545pm. It was dark, and dry out. The road I was on is a two lane state highway, with a full middle "turning lane" that runs for several miles to assist people turning left, when traveling in either direction. Speed limit is 55mph.
I noticed in front of me, about 500 feet, a car on a side street "blew threw his stop sign" and got in front of me. He did not cut me off, and had plenty of space to merge, but he ran the stop sign to do it. I caught up to him easily, as I was already doing the limit, and his mid 90s Honda was only able to get up to about 45mph, in the time it took for our two cars to catch each other. I was going to high beam him / honk in disgust of him running the stop sign, but realized he probably wouldn't have put 2 and 2 together. It had a loud fart can, not that this matters, but I found it amusing.
About 1/2 mile from where he merged/ran the stop sign, is a traffic light. It was red with 10 or so cars COMPLETELY STOPPED waiting for the green. As we both approach, I get to the point where I start to brake, and the Honda just keeps going. I'm slowing to about 20mph, and he's 10 car lengths ahead of me, and still NO BRAKE LIGHTS from his car. I said to myself, "Is this guy going to f'ing stop?" I slow to almost a stop now, about 15 car lengths behind him, sensing a major wreck is about to unfold in front of me, and when he was about 30 feet away from the last stopped car, I see him slam on the brakes, tires screech, and WHA----BAMMMMM rear ends a late model Cadillac who was the last car in the line of COMPLETELY STOPPED CARS!!!! WTF!
This guy just totally rear-ended this old lady, who was sitting at the light, completely stopped, and this guy flat out rams her at like 30mph! Are you telling me people are this ignorant behind the wheel? I really couldn't believe what I saw!!
The woman got out, she was totally ok, and the accident causing driver seemed dazed. Other people got out of their cars and called the police, and since I was already late, I left.
I realize why every motorcycle safety course recommends you always look behind you, leave the bike in gear, and have enough of a space to make an emergency move in case someone is about to rear end you, when stopped at a red light.
To see two cars, destroyed, for "no good reason", is still unbelievable and hard to accept!
Watch out, out there!
